So I'm building a 2000 point mechvet list and I need some advice on the heavy support choices. This is an army I'm building to play in a friends tourny. I already know that there will also be 4 space marine armies (2 cantor drop pod armies and 1 Space pup army) a Tau army, and 1 nidzilla army.

What heavy support options do you think would work out best in my list based on the above armies I will be playing against?

Basic L/Russ are quite handy, and come with a goodly amount of range. I also like basic plasma tanks, for three chances of hitting something, and as my last choice...Hydras, as the amount of high strength shots with re-rolls is great. 2 for 150 points please

The other thing you can do to help is a Vendetta, as you will definately struggle against AV14 vehicles.

Demolishers are too short ranged, punisher not reliable enough and the Exterminator not enough AP. I don't rate the artillery, as they don't have the survivability of a proper tank.

I load up on meltas in chimeras, and only have a few plasmas to bulk up the shooting. In my 1500 its 4 melta in the coy cmd, 3 more in one vets with shotguns and 3 plas in vets n lasguns. I fill out the rest with a russ, 2 executioners, 2 hydras and 3 sentinels. Supported by a vendettta and 2 chimeras.

My instinct would be to take LRBTs first. If you know you're facing space marines and nidzilla, hydras and anything else without AP1-3 seems like it would be of limited use.

How about a selection of the following:
Demolisher, HHF: 165
LRBT w/plasma sponsons: 190
Demolisher w/plasma: 205
Executioner with plasma: 230

All of these give you the blasty, AP2 goodness your enemies require. I think the main thing with LRBTs is to protect them from enemy deepstrikers and anything else that can get meltaguns within half range. You could just surround the tanks with infantry, or you could start castled up in a corner, or simply keep everything off the board if a drop pod army takes the first turn.

As stated, Hydras and griffons seem to be out against your heavily armoured opponents, Manticores and Artillery seem a bit risky against drop pod armies.
