hey hey. just thought i'd throw up some pictures of my catachan army so far. i got alot of work ahead of me, i'm keeping my army true to a deathworld theme ( if you remember the catachan codex from like 10 years ago). but with the new IG codex i'm adding some armor in over time.
i'm all over the place when it comes to assembling and painting... i've almost finished my first vet squad all with shotguns and a few meltas. at the same time im building and painting a valkyrie, finishing off a sentinel and assembling my second vet squad.
i hope you enjoy, any critique is welcome as i'm always looking to improve my style of painting.

well that's it for now. im thinking about making some rough riders out of them lizardmen mounts as i saw a blog from somewhere with the same idea and it turned out really awesome. so yeh, heavy troop army with alot of sentinels and a few tanks here and there.

hope you enjoyed, more to come soon.

While I can't openly endorse people smoking the marijuanas, I have no problem with plastic jungle fighters toking up here and there. Just explain that it's a cigar if a young'n points out the model.

The joint is a bit juvenile, but good work on the first two characters.

Looking to be quite the characterful army.

I like them a lot. As for the joint, maybe it's for medical reasons so it's legit.

yes! exactly medical reasons. my troops suffer from post traumatic stress after fighting all the vile xenos that threaten the emperium. so they need something to sooth their mind, body and soul

Nice work so far. My only suggestion regarding Straken would be to give his skin a bit more of a highlight, as the definition is a bit lost with the dark tones of his bionics and fatigues.

While I am against drug use I don't have a problem with any models drawing from 'real life'. Also, I may be wrong but isn't there mention of illegal drug use in some of the Gaunt's Ghosts novels?

Yup. Lho Sticks are a pretty common narcotic in the Guard so it's not unreasonable to have a model "taking the edge off" during a long campaign. Non-illegal stuff like cigars, bac-sticks, etc are all part of the fluff as well so it's fairly appropriate. Catachans are especially known for their rebelliousness so I'd say they are even more likely to be sporting illegal substances.

This being said, it's all in how you present it. If you show your model to your friends and say "Look! He's tokin' up! Hurr!" then yeah, that's pretty juvenile and goes along the same lines as the penis soulgrinder. On the other hand, if you are actually going for an accurate portrayal of battlefield situations in the 40k universe, then there's nothing juvenile about it at all.

Perception is reality, as they say.

By the way, I love the face paint and skin tones you chose for your Catachans! Mine turned out a little too rosy pink for my taste so I might have to steal your colouration for the next batch.

being anti drug myself, i even dont find a problem with the smoking guy...
really, its not like its unheard of for soldiers to do drugs on duty (nam anyone?)
it really goes with the catachan feel as well...

that being said, good start to your army...
your metals could use a little work, and the skin could use a bit more contrast, but its by no means a bad looking army so far

Ok first of all, does it matter if a model is smoking? I don't think anyone should care about it.

Back on topic, the army is very nicely done. I especially like the warpaint and the metal on Straken's bionics.

I find it necessary to point out that as per the Infantryman's Uplifting Primer, possession and use of Lho sticks or other narcotics are punishable by bolt to the back of the skull.

Having this been said, the models are great and I agree with the above. Modelling smoking is not a problem in my mind, because so many of the heads are already smoking. Creed has a cigar in his hand, and several other IG heads (catachan, I think there might be a sentinel pilot too) have cigar/cigarette/whatever in their mouths. In trying to model a realistic army, there should actually probably be MORE people smoking. It passes the time and gives the soldiers something to focus on. On the other hand, if you're going to call him "Super Bluntman 420!!!!!111", then you're acting like you're 14 years old, and I'll tell you to pull up your pants and get lost, though it does not seem like you've done this. Something that might be cool if you decide to do another is to pose him so that he's lighting up with the flamer in hand.

Did you use badab black to wash the guys' muscles? IMHO it looks a bit too black - accentuates the already absurd anatomy of jungle fighters. Maybe use delvan mud next time? Also, what's the grim reaper doing with his left hand? Kind of seems to be in the way of his eyes rather than high enough to be a 'far off gaze'. Just my two cents

Im digging all of them for sure. Very characterful, which is a good thing in my mind. The warpaint reminds me of Sting, yes the wrestler lol.

I've got to agree with the other comments on the skin tone. It looks like they all took a bath in motor oil, some having toweled off a bit more or less than others. I'd try a gentler brown-based wash for the skin, instead of black, then highlight to taste. If you want simplicity, you could skip the final highlights and just do an all-over wash, as long as you pick one particularly well suited to skin. They're not bad, as is, but one small change could make them look so much better that it's hard not to harp on that one point. The rest is looking good, though.

I think you're off to a good start. I really like your bases. I'm not too sure if I buy the scythe, though. It just looks really out of place to me.
About the joint:
I could care less if a model had a joint, syringe hanging out of his arm, glass pipe, whatever. I think it's corny, but it doesn't bother me any. As an ex-drug user, I do find smoking weed to be a juvenile activity. When you get older, chances are you'll see it, too. Not to say that I am against it, because I'm not.

thanks for the comments so far guys. by the end of the week i should have my vet squad finished off... ( still 2 meltas and anotehr shotty to add to make it 10), harker will be done tonight and i wanna get to my sentinel seeing as i've had it for a while.

the muscle recesses are badab black and ogryn flesh washes mixed together.. i give all my models that wash but i vary the ratios in certain areas to which i apply and mix. may look a bit dark in the photos but not so dark in real life.

strakens arm isn't chipped just the way i highlighted it, gives it a wear and tear type of feel, he is in the front lines after all getting sprayed with all types of stuff.

the grim reaper is shouting out. hence the left arm posed in such a way, cant really see it on that angle. once he is done ill re-post a image of him. i understand that the weapon of the grim reaper seems out of place but i want my army to stand out and to appear somewhat primative. catachan is afterall a deathworld and the only resource they offer to the imperium is themselves, so making weapons out of scratch doesn't seem too out of place if you understand that.

on the joint dude, i'm not putting him out there like "omg look at this guy, he got a doobie!!11!". im just trying to achieve a rare model with some character, it's not me that's pointing him out laughing look at the joint, it will most likely be my opponent and other people. furthermore im 24, i've had my fair share of the green and these days it's a novelty to me nothing more.

anyways, by the end of the week ill throw up a couple more pictures. thanks again for the kind replies
peace
