Where do they go to post pictures for the front page? It's not the latest image, so how far back in the
thread does dakka look for a thumbnail?

It is quite a complicated algorithm for the sake of efficiency. I cant remember in detail right now but it is something like the first attached image in the latest post with attached images, and if there are no attached images then the first gallery image in the latest post with gallery images. Then there are a load of spam traps and other filters which can cancel some of the posts being checked.
