I think this is the best place to put this one, but unfortunately it won't get seen very much here.

I know this may seem a bit presumptuous, having only recently joined, but I think being somewhat of an outsider (still) gives me an advantage in this case. It seems to me that Dakka is striving, whether through design or accident, to be the foremost Warhammer-related forum on the internet, and to also cater to other, similar hobbies. It has been well set up, its gallery seems quite a powerful engine, and it offers everything most other forums have (Tau Online, B&C, etc.) in one place. So yes, Dakka's audience is growing very quickly, but it is still competing at the same level with other forums.

Would it not be a good idea, thus, for somebody to develop A DAKKA DAKKA APP FOR iPHONE? And not just iPhone - Blackberry and other smart phones are all equally deserving of this service, if it is ever developed. I think it would provide several benefits:

1. Practicality. For those of us who use Dakka a lot and like to keep up with things going on here, an iPhone app would be one of the easiest and most readily accessible ways to do so. Viewing Dakka on a small screen is not always a rewarding experience, and a streamlined way to view it would make it far more enjoyable.

2. Competitiveness. While I am not suggesting that Dakka was set up to rival other forums, it is somewhat inevitable that it has, in some way or another. None, to my knowledge, have an iPhone app. Also, billions of apps are downloaded (literally billions, it boggles my mind). Eventually, people who download Dakka out of curiosity will swell Dakka's fanbase, and indeed that of the hobby in general. An app would be a fantastic advertising tool.

3. Relevance. There is an app for everything (Nike has an app that you can design shoes on, for goodness sake). Why not Dakka too?

Now, am I well-wide of the mark in suggesting this, or is it a good idea? Would a mobile/iphone page be better?

Is it even physically possible? If it is, what would you like to see in Dakkapp (feel free to suggest an infinitely cooler name, hahaha)? I have no experience or understanding of how app design works, so please feel free to enlighten me and the Dakka community...

I'm not very interested in making an app for apple as I dont really support their vendor lock in, and from what I understand, free user generated content is a big no-no in getting approved so it would probably be wasted effort.

However, a mobile phone version of dakka is in the pipeline ... basically a trimmed down, small resolution version of dakka in an easily readable colour scheme. It is a while off as it is low priority but it is on the way.

I can use Dakka on my Blackberry..

I can read my PM's, but I can't respond though..

Blackberrys don't have flash so an app wouldn't do much good.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Aagh, I accidentally voted yes. I meant to vote, "No, it would be pointless."

A version that disables or further shrinks avatars, has a smaller font and less detailed forum view would be great. I use Dakka on my phone occasionally during a boring OS reinstall at work, or whilst waiting to pick up my girlfriend. I'd do it more often if I wasn't using so much of my precious, expensive data allowance...

Well if we had a mobile app for dakka, the application would weed out all the uncessary data usage. I am very much for the moblie application. However, I vote that it should be an across the board application. I am sure the code differs between devices so that would probably make the design much more difficult. But i see no really justifiable reason to exclude any one party from the application.

All well and good, I think if anyones interested, you could get us to pay for it.

I beleive shape services will make this kind of app under their name.

Or, maybe make it Safari friendly, at least.

It's difficult to work off of an iPhone.

I'm surprised the BB software doesn't have a mobile option. It sounds like the core functionality has been tweaked by Dakka's Adeptus Mechanicus.
