Hey guys, i think this is in the right place, please re-direct if not...

Anyways i am a tyranid player and going back to space marines (after many years), stripping and rebuilding an old land raider, i realised why do people put side sponsors on the rear panel? It says in the rules that range of weapons from vehicles is done from the barrel of the gun, so you want the the gun to be closer to the enemy right?

It gives you the widest range for troops to disembark - and an extra inch on a lascannon is very unlikely to make a difference.

On other sponsons I've see redeemers with them forwards.

Because some people like to have Nice looking models rather than trying to abuse rules.

Not only that, but it does not make sense to me to put an exit door in front of a gun. It seems like bad placement to have the door in the line of fire of the gun.

since you've been out of 40k and are coming back to play marines, you may be suprised that terminators are now on larger bases (the old wraithlord bases). it's quite difficult to put 6-8 terminator sized bases (depending on which LR you take your transport capacity varies) within 2" of just the front ramp. if people field the larger squads, they need those other two doors to forward deploy and still maintain coherency. i now have that problem with my old metal/plastic hybrid as i modelled the hurricane bolters in the front.

not quite. It's from the weapon mounting, which in the case of lascannons is a good 1 1/2" further back. Not really an issue with the range of a lascannon though.

Mine are on the back. If I mounted the guns up front I couldn't put witty custom decals on the doors (like "Warning: Do not stand in front of laser cannons.")

Also +1 to what Gwar said.

Because it's easier to fit a full squad out the door in the way I want it (off to one side, maybe?) if I have the two hatches up front.

Also because you are expected to assemble models as intended. If you play by INAT, this is RAW, while if you don't, most people will still apply this unwritten rule anyway. I have yet to see an official picture of a LRG or LRC with its guns in front, although the redeemer does have them there.

Ive seen someone say they could glue their lascannons on top of the the landraider.

This was specifically for Chaos; there is no rule I can find other than dont be a slow that doesnt allow this for Chaos LAndraiders.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

For this, I can only direct you to the INAT FAQ, which tells you where to put the weapons on your vehicles. As much as I despise this document, these sections work pretty well.

Actually, all the INAT FAQ gives are the arcs of fire for the default placement.

Page 81 and 82 of the Space Marine codex do have images of a LRG and LRC with the guns up front, though technically not of assembled models

Edit: And we all also know how consistent W40k imagery tend to be.

Page 81 and 82 also imply they are unstoppable killing machines, when they are in fact laughably easy to kill.

It's been a while since I looked, but I'm fairly sure the assembly instructions list it as optional.

Codex: BT, pages 49 & 61 and the front cover interior have a studio Crusader with forward sponsons. Page 43 also has forward mounted sponsons on the Land Raider Crusader artwork.

Codex: DA, page 34 has the Land Raider entry, with the Land Raiders in the artwork shown with forward sponsons.

Codex: Space Marines has the artwork for all three Land Raider variants with forward sponsons.

Cities of Death has a Land Raider with forward sponsons on page 31.

That's just from a quick flick. It's possible that there are some I missed

I rather suspect that most people simly put them on the rear hatch because it looks better.

It can be done either way. Personally I put the crusader / redeemer weps up front becaus ethe extra 1" can mean the difference between 2 at 12 or 1 at 24 or a few models on the template. Regular LR I put the Las Canons in back for looks. Either way there's no distinct way it has to be.

There's a few.

Like the artwork on the front of the box.

Is that official enough?

(ETA I am, of course, referring to the original box for the Mk IIIc land raider - not the current one which has a photo.)

Huh.

How about that?

Assembling Land Raiders with forward sponsons is totally OK. In my opinion, it also makes a lot more sense and therefore looks better, especially on the Redeemer and Crusader.

I don't get it.
Why do people feel irked that the front doors are in front of the guns.

You know they could just stop firing and let them out, they duck, and the LR continues to fire...

It's not like they hit CAPS LOCK AND KEEP THE LASCANNON ON FULL AUTO AND KEEP FIRING EVEN IF GUYS ARE GETTING OUT OF THE RIDE...

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

What Alpharius and Insaniak said.

There are no official instructions to assemble the Land Raider with the guns at the rear door position.

There are lots of examples online including officially built models which have the guns at the front.

In fact my impression is that the forward position is getting more popular, possibly because it looks better.

If it were cheating to grab the extra inch of gun range by putting the guns forward, the extra inch of assaulter deployment with the doors on the front is even more cheating because an inch is much more important for an assaulter than for a laser cannon.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I agree that lascannons in the back are OK, but I imagine hurricane bolters and flamestorm cannons as "constant spray" type weapons.

Although, for Black Templars it makes sense to put them at the back. The Power Armoured Brothers have nothing to fear, while it "encourages" the Carapace Armoured Initiates to move forward ASAP

Well, I know a terminus requires them on the back, cus the little lasscannons go on front doors. So put em on the back just to be safe.

In the new space wolf codex, the landraider entry has just an art work picture of having the Lascannon sponsoons in the front. While all the studio models used for the army pictures have them on the back door.

I personally think the sponsoons on the back look the best, but I put my hurrican bolters on the front because of the extra inch. Its also why I have the multi-melta on the front hole instead of the back.
