HOW are they sanctioned? I can't find anything that explains how they do it or the rituals/whatever that they do. Anyone know?

As if on cue, you hear two people singing from the stairwell, and the door is opened and a pair of very smelly, very dirty guardsmen stumble in, completely drunk, and covered in vomit, and immediately collapse unconsious on the porch. You drag them to their beds, realising that they will not be waking up for some time.

The soul binding is all astropaths, so that they have the required power to channel over great distances of warp. It also burns out their eyes.

In Dark Heresy, all psykers have to roll on a table to find the side effects of their sanctioning, and it is implied that it is a series of difficult and painful tests and training on Terra, with lots of armed people standing by to kill them at the slightest sign of trouble. For example, my psyker has bionic eyes because he lost his in one of his trials. Other options include having to wear dentures because all their teeth got knocked out, tattoos that make them stutter uncontrollably when talking about demons, taking insanity points from being exposed to terrifying visions or never being able to sleep soundly again.

My personal favourite is this-
Pain Through Nerve Induction: The skin on the back of your right hand is horribly scarred. You are uncomfortable around bald, robed women.

The list of sanctioning side effects is pg 26 of the DH core rulebook, and while it doesn't explictly state the trials, it's enough to give an idea that they are VERY unpleasant.

I am under the assumption of one of two things.

1.) They see the Emperor in his actual state, like on the golden throne in the the (necrotic) flesh.

2.) They are subjected to a full...."view?"....of the warp. No buffers, no restraints, just pure warp/chaotic flow.

I think they can see the Emperor a little time, while the ritual is been prepared, and then... they see the Emperor and all his knowledge, in Warp terms.

They would probably have training and preparation that would involve:
- Intense psycho-indoctrination
- Implanted wards of some sort(for instance, wards "etched" underneath their skin)
- Implanted "/kill" feature:device somehow can't be surgically removed; sheathed in a layer of wards and programmed so that when the device reaches a certain "evil threshold"(maybe a sensor triggers a [contained] chemical reaction if the wards react too strongly), an aneurysm or something is triggered

When deployed onto a battlefield, they're probably escorted by "black guard" and kept isolated within a cage of some sort(this was indeed the case with the psykers some of the Gaunt's Ghosts books; not sure if they were "sanctioned", though).

Many have tried.

...and failed?

No, they died.

Once again GW 'homages' something from Dune.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

For the normal ones, I think they are slightly lobotomised to limit their power. Then they are kept under constant watch from a Commissar.

'Sanctioned' implies that they are 'allowed' psykers - psykers who have been thoroughly tested and therefore given a 'license to psyk'
