Subject: Blackmoor does Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

Well, it is time for my next army since every winter I try to start a new one to start out the tournament season.
So I decided to do Pre-Hersey Thousand Sons. I am a long time Thousand Sons player and have wanted to reset the army and start from scratch for a while, and what better way to do it than to go back to the future and do them pre-heresy? This is a good time to do them now since they have a lot of buzz with the Space Wolf codex and the books Prospero Burns and Thousand Sons.
So my question is, does anyone have any good options or ideas on how to make them, or pictures of other people doing them?

Ok, so what I did was make a preliminary list to see what exactly I have to do and this is what i came up with:
Ahriman
Dreadnought
20 Tac Marines
2 Rhinos
10 Thousand Sons
8 Havocs
5 Obliterators
So to bottom line it, that I one extensive Ahriman conversion, a Dreadnought which will be a major pain to convert, and 38 Marines and 2 rhinos. I want to do 10 more marines for spares (To paint them at the same time because I find that if I paint some more at a later date the colors will be different). I also want to add some assault/raptors to the mix.
Looking at the number that will be a lot of work. I was thinking that I could get it done by Jan, but I think I have to realistically expect to get it done by Adepticon in late March.

No termies though? I love the look of the preheresy ones with the wide shoulder plating.

I was going to convert the Oblits to look like terminators.
In the Visions of War art book there are pictures of 2 terminator like units that will the oblits.
They are:
Rehahti Magnus's coven
Uthizaar's sect
I am thinking about adding a Pre-Heresy Land Raider (I like the forgeworld model)
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/phlandraider.htm $100 is a bit steep though, and I don't really want to spend very much money on this army. Some Terminators could go with it for some assault, but I do not know where the points will come from. I don't want to lower my troop count.

As someone who is doing pre-heresy Space Wolves, I will be watching this with great interest. I'm looking at getting that pre-heresy Land Raider kit too, but will be waiting as that $100 price tag is a bit steep right now. One suggestion I will make is to pick up the Steam Knight heads from Maxmini. http://www.maxmini.eu/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=12&products_id=60
The head on the upper left is ideal for pre-heresy Thousand Sons, and you can order just that one if you ask them for it. I ordered their jump packs and a set of those helmets for my Wolves, and was very happy with their service, and the prices are pretty reasonable too.

Interesting that you are using the CSM book for a pre-heresy list. I agree with MeanGreenStompa, pre-heresy terminators are among the coolest models ever.
I think the Thousand Sons have one of the most fascinating stories behind them, of all the Space Marine legions, both before and after the Heresy.
It will be interesting to see how this develops.

I'll be keeping an eye on this one too. I love the story of the Thousand Sons and every time I order from Forgeworld I tell them the models I'd like them to make next are a set for them. Be interesting to see how this one pans out.
Also love those heads Thanatos73.

Can I suggest skipping forward 10 years to the age where you don't really care about what people say on the internet. Studies show that it decreases your anger about life in general by 37%. - Flashman |

Here is a picture of some Pre-heresy models I painted up for the LA GT in 2005 for my Thousand Sons Chosen.
Looking back at these as test models they are in bad shape, and I will have to a lot of work.
One thing that really stands out is that my freehand sucks, so I will have to have some decals made.

I was doing some thinking about Pre-Heresy armies and I came to the conclusion that they look really nice, but they are very boring on the table top.
Take everything that is at least a little interesting in the Space Marine codex and Chaos Codex and throw them out, and what you have left is a Pre-Heresy army.
You do have a great looking army thought because you have Jetbikes instead of bikes, turbo-fan back packs instead of the regular assault marines, and the unique look of the earlier space marine armors.
But underneath the look you have a very basic army.
I have changed around some things so here is the army so far:
Ahriman
Dreadnought
10 Chaos Space Marines
10 Chaos Space Marines
Rhino
9 Thousand Sons
5 Oblits
Land Raider
I traded the havocs for a land raider. I did this for a few reasons. Some armies just do not have an answer for Land Raiders. Also it is mobile and can move troops around while Havocs have a little better firepower, but they are very static. The good news is that it means that I have to do 10 less marines, and will have an interesting model to work on. Sure makes the army rather small though which is both good and bad. If I was not so interested in the look of the army and wanted to go for more power I would drop Ahriman and the dreadnought and up the firepower and maybe some terminators for counter assault.
