Due to the sad lack of GW US caring about what their tournament going clientele want, I'm considering a flight out to the U.K. next year for one of THEIR GT's.
I figure not flying to two American GT's may wind up saving me enough money to go to a single UK GT. Maybe throw a little extra in there so that the GF can come along and have a little travelling vacation.
Question is, those of you that have been to a U.K. GT....what is your opinion of them? Worth the long trip? I suspect I already know the answer but I thought this may be an interesting discussion.
I know Inquisitor Malice has been over the pond to compete. Anything to say about that experience Greg?

dude, there are still GT events in the US, just independent. Mechanicon looks like it should be pretty fun... DaBoyz GT in rochester was pretty sweet... I think there's some more events coming up....

Oh, I know....
I dont miss Adepticon since 3 years back now, and I'm prolly driving to Necro next year.
...but for a GW sponsored event, I dunno, it's just something I've always thought of doing.

Personally I think it would be cool as hell going over there and playing some Brits. Im not a tournament type player by any means, but if I had the chance, I would go for it for sure.
Its a long trek tho. When my oldest brother was in the Marines and was an MSG he traveled there to protect President Bush a couple times and some ambassador. If I remember it right it takes like 16 hours from here to there. But he said it was a cool place to visit

If you do decide to come over don't hesitate to ask for advice or help sorting stuff out, I'm off to heat 3 end o'the month and we normally make the trek at least once a year. I'm sure we could slip you in our accomadtion and so on.
..man, reading that back, that sounds really creepy, , sorry.

Remember that you buy a ticket for a Heat (there are three), and try to win a ticket to the GT Final. A friend of mine in Connecticut is originally English and flies over for a GT heat and the final pretty much every year.
Was it Greg who went over a won a Heat? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Hey Shane -
It is worth it and eventually I plan to do it again. We did a relatively quick weekend trip the first time (4 days) and stayed 9 days the second time when we qualified for the finals.
As far as play styles, I think there is more variety here in the US. At least from what I have seen, there were a significant number of net lists in the mix. Bring what works for you and you should do fine.
I have some tips as far as travel arrangements and what to expect. If you make the decision to go, just PM me and we can touch base.
Later,

If you go I would take enough time off so you can make a vacation out of it. The bed & breakfasts are very affordable and very nice, plus you get a big breakfast each day. It's very easy to travel around the country using the rail system. I love London but it can be pricey... They have a lot of nice museums there and it's a great place to go shopping. If you like soccer you should try to see an English Premiere Division match... Chelsea and Arsenal are always fun to watch.

My GF lives in Pennsylvania, so I'm a regular commuter over the water. Flights to Newark or Baltimore from Heathrow are about 7-8 hours.
And yes, trains here are freaking expensive these days. I recommend the coach if you can spare the time.

US (and Canadian iirc) tourists can get train passes that allow you to catch any train, any time for a fixed period. They're actually a good deal compared to standard fares. Or they were about five years ago when I used to sell them.

Your "friend" forgot to buy a ticket this year so I sold him my ticket to heat 2.
I took off about 3 weeks in November and I was going to do a European vacation and get in a little 40k while I was over there, but I had to back out. I am planning on doing it again next year.
One thing that is very important is that you have to look for when the tickets to the heats go on sale, and jump on them right away. They sell out in about a week, so if you snooze, you will lose. I think they go on sale on June.

London's cool, but I would recommend taking a few days to travel around - the UK isn't that big compared to the US (and 'The Most Obvious Statement of The Day Award' goes to...) so check out some castles/Stonehenge, plus there's some nice countryside up north. And slags. Musn't forget the slags.

I attend the uk gt every year and there massively fun well worth
the trip.
We play a little differently in the uk though all games are 1500pts and the scoring system
is based on the football (soccer) system, 3 for win 1 for draw 0 for loss, and there's no soft scores so bring your worst
it sounds like a good plan shane if you want anymore info drop me a PM and I'll be happy to help, I'm heading upto heat 1 nxt year so I hope to see you there. I'd love a game against the infamous wrecking crew.

the uk GT's are fun. I have played in a couple. The weekend at warhammer world is great.
A quick note on b&b's are you have to get up to early to get breakfast at most of them. I usually stayed at a pub for around $30 a night. I can't really help you with how to get from london to nottingham as I had a car. Greg was close to tossing his cookies as we bent space and time on the trip from Chester to Nottingham.
I suggest getting a car and driving gas is really expensive but being able to get to warhammer world easily is nice. We have more machines going over to airbus next year. I might have to "help" with them

You can take the train from either London airport to Nottingham. It's really easy. There's usually a bar in the train so you can quaff a few pints on the way over.

Highlord with a Blackstone Fortress
Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I don't do the tournament scene but the main difference between US and UK tournaments is that there is no comp. Feel free to build a killer list, most gamers are more casual in the Uk and willing to set aside minimaxing for a decent game experience, but conversely in a tournament all this stops and tuned lists become the norm. Though this info might be outdated, so a confirmation is in order.
Second while the hobby is very much a minority there is a much greater saturation of GW stores here than elsewhere, expect a disproportional representation. UK tournaments and conventions are the same size as US ones despite a smaller population base.
Third no matter how you travel it will cost you far more than you are used to, account for a large budget for car hire and fuel or fares.

Petrol is currently between £1.03 and 1.14 per litre, depending where you fill up.
You can check car hire costs on line. It is more expensive than the USA.
Don't forget to budget something for parking because it's difficult to find anywhere that is free.
Train travel is cheap if you can book the cheapest tickets but expensive if you can't. You can look up tickets on www.thetrainline.com.
The cheapest tickets are available a week or earlier in advance and have restrictions n the time you can travel. For example, you may not be allowed to take a train before 9:30 am or something like that.
