Hi!

I attended the Mayhem Octoberfest Tournament on the 24th and 25th of October this year and as per normal I didn't start painting my army until way too late!

I had elected to take something a little different to this years tournaments and opted for as many Land Raiders as I could possibly fit in a list at 1750, this was 5.

On the 13th of October the army looked like this:

The limitted number of infantry (24) had been built but were also in an unprimed state.

As it turned out I had left it way too late and ended up painting until 6am on the morning of the tournament. I've included some pictures I have taken of the army on it's display base, I hope you enjoy them.

I will be doing this all over again as I am attending a tournament in Norwich on the 29th of November and my army for it is as yet unpurchased!

How did you end up doing? And what was your army list? 5 Raiders just looks and sounds sick!

Hope is the first step on the path to disappointment."

Here are some additional pictures I've just quickly taken!

One of the Crusader Squads:

I built the 10 crusader squad guys and 10 stormtroopers in 1 day to a basic level and then went back later to paint the eyes/faces/fine details.

Here's one of the stormtrooper teams:

Pretty obvious but: scout kit with marine heads whacked on, shotgun barrels chopped off and silenced boltgun barrels added.

Here's the Inquisitor, 2 mystics and the Emperor's Champion. These were painted between 4am and 6am on the day of the tournament, I couldn't really see by the time I finished (badly) the champion:

And finally here's one of the Land Raiders:

All the raiders had forgeworld doors on them and far too many greenstuffed ourity seals.

I came 25th out of 60ish players, I'll add a bit more about the games and the list later!

Five landraiders in a 1750 point list?

FIVE landraiders?

Holydogshi.

Great painting, the highlights look great on the landraiders - they really stand out. Solid paintjob all around.

Five landraiders?

Wow! I really like the look and feel of the army .

Very small model count, but if there'd be any more, it would have been impossible to finish! Especially with how good these look!

I'd love to see some account of the battles, and what your next speed-project is

That's amazing. Paintjob is original and creative. And those purity seals give some great contrast to the colors. You might as well join the "eavy Metal team right now!

The concept of the list had a number of facets:

1) armour 14 all round, reduce effectiveness of opponents army as not all weaponry can harm these vehicles.
2) it would be cool to have 5 land raiders.
3) no-one had played a list like it before and as such I would possibly be able to take advantage of this.
4) cross my fingers and hope to play orks or daemons a couple of times as these armies struggle to punch land raiders (or so I thought), nids as long as they don't get in combat.
5) low model count would mean it wouldn't take TOO long to paint (that being said land raiders do take quite a long time to paint.
6) the list got 18 out of a possible 20 for composition soft-scoring in the tournament.

I played 6 games and these are briefly outlined as follows:

Game 1 - Dead Zone (Mayhem special mission, similar to sieze ground with 3 objectives)

I played a vulkan SM list something along the lines of:

Vulkan
6 thundershield termies in crusader
3x 10 man tactical squads with MM and melta gun, serg with fist in drop pods
vinidicator
dread with twin las and fist
Speeder with MM

I managed to stand off from his army, immobilise the crusader and the vindicator and then repeatedly tank shock his thundershield termies off of the objective. Vulkan managed to smash up one of my crusader squads whom I had disembarked away from objectives in an attempt to distract from the mission. The emperor's champion ripped into what was left of his troop choices whom I repeatedly pummelled with 2 crusaders.

I won 16-4.

Game 2 - size ground, 5 objectives

I played a generic marine list:

chaplain riding in crusader with thundershield terminators
3 x 10 man tactical squads with melta gun, lascannon and serg with fist (1 is in drop pod)
1 x 5 man dev team with 3 ML and 1 MM, serg.
1 x land speeder squadron, 1 HB/HF, 1 MM /F.

The game started with me immobilising the crusader and generally backing away from the plethora of melta weaponry, my opponents pod came down and I fired a crusader into the squad (mystics ftw), the melta gun in the squad either missed or didn't pen. On turn 3 I took out the land speeder squadron. As I was playing against a pretty much all infantry marine army I had to focus my attentions on a unit at a time, those being whichever had the nearest melta gun. The raiders stayed intact until the chaplain displayed an uneering ability to place melta bombs on any land raider he could reach. Sadly for me the game ended on turn 5 as I was ready to start zoooming about the board using ghetto smoke lanuchers and try to sneak a cheeky win.

As it turned out I lost 14-6.

Game 3 - Annihalation.

I played a nid list:

tyrant with venom cannon
3 warriors with stuff
3 warriors with stuff
8 stealers
8 stealers
3 mid size units of gaunts
1 unit of without number termagents
combat carnifex
venom cannon + strangler carnifex
3 zoantrhopes

This was 1 of 2 games I played in the tournament against an army my list was ideal against. I outranged the zoantrhopes and killed them, then took down whatever was worth the most points (tournament uses different kill points to BRB) whilst remaining out of charge range of anything that could hurt the raiders. Once again the game ended on turn 5 when i could have done with another turn to rack up more points.

I won 18-2.

Went back to mates house to have a few beers/watch the footie with rest of the team but I fell asleep at 8pm (I'd had 7 hours in the last 50 so I guess it was about time for a nap).

Game 4 - Salvage (similar to sieze ground but you have to be infantry to "pick up" the objective and once picked up can't embark/turbo-boost etc)

I played an ork horde army with big unit of nob bikers - ideal match up but on worst mission for me.

warboss with fist, squig, cybork, bosspole, warbike
10 nob bikers, 4 fists, 4 big choppas
3x30 boys with nob with fist
15 lootas

Essentially I played the game wrong and tried to win when I would have probably had more luck just tank shocking onto and off of the main objective to lose 14-6. I'm not sure if I got first turn or not but in this game the dice gods didn't favour me and I couldn't kill nob bikers for love nor money, by the time the warboss was in combat with raiders I don't think I'd killed a single ork. One of the crusaders was zooming towards the big ork unit on the main objective, the nob charged, hit twice (6s to hit), then got one pen one glance (5+6), then got a 5 on the pen :|, I was not terribly impressed. I never really recovered from that and although I killed the warboss and made the nob bikers flee from repeated tank shocks I had no way to kill the orks on the main objective and one of the minor ones and as such I lost.

18-2 loss, QQ!

Game 5 - Capture and Control.

I played guard Air Cav

CCS /4 meltas
2x 10 vets with 4 meltas
1 x 10 vets with 4 plasmas
1 x 10 vets with 4 flamers
2 valks
2 valks
3 vendettas

I was feeling confident about this as the vendettas could only smash one raider a turn and I fancied I could bring down the valks with the metlas in b4 they got too close then charge the squads and smash em up. Sadly my opponent managed to steal the intitative, pop a raider with close range meltas and stun another with the vendettas. In retaliation the 2 melta gun units got charged, 1 was charged by a crusader squad, the other by the emperors champion effectively negating that aspect of the army. I poured all my fire into the valk squad which was still carrying a melta gun squad and did diddly, they proceeded to annihalate a crusader and in turn were smashed by the crusader squad who had been quite happily minding their own business until then. Another raider got popped on turn 3 as the vendettas hit with all 9 shots :|. The crusader squad fighting the guardeventually got wiped out (no idea how they lost to guardsmen in combat that much and failed every fearless armour save), the champion wiped out his squad then what was left of the guardsmen who were celebrating killing 5 of the emperor's not so finest. He was then picked on by 2 valks, must have wounded him 12+ times and needless to say he died.

Whilst all that was going on I had one raider camping on my objective which proceeded to use ghetto smoke on my turn 5, the remaining crusader got immobilised 22" from my opponents objective which meant his 10 man guard squad were perfectly safe 25" away, was a shame as the crusader would have made very short work of them otherwise. My opponent sensibly assaulted the raider and in doing so got a troop choice within 3" of my objective so my stormtroopers had to disembark and fry them. Game ended and I lost.

14-6 :(

Game 6 - Annihalation, obligatory lash list.

2 xlash princes
3 termies /w land raider
8 berserkers
2x 6 plague in rhino
vindicator
2 x3 oblits

I once again had the intiative stolen from me, I proceeded to lose a land raider. then ineffective fire from the 2 armies ensued, lash princes tried to scare me but 3+ save isn't good enough to last long and both were brought down. The game was very tactical and after losing the raider on the frist turn I was 3 KP down and never really got back into the game.

Lost 13-7.

And thus all the games had been played, awards were handed out, I didn't win best army as there was a very ncie exodite army there which someone had spent a lot of time converting and painting to congrats to that man! I placed 25th as my score was boosted by my painting and altough I'd lost 4 games only 1 of them had been a real drubbing. Our team won the team competition which we were so desperate to win and we were all very happy!

The next list is for a 1500pt tournament using the standard GW scoring method for missions and that coupled with a lack of time to paint means I will be taking an ork list something along these lines:

2 x warboss /w fist, squig, cybork, skorcha, boss pole, bike.
2 x 8 nob bikers, 3 fists, 3 big choppas, 3 skorchas, 2 bos poles, 1 waaagh banner, cybork bodies, painboy.
15 grotz.

Current concept for the converting/painting is that the orkz found an old movie rental store and watched a bunch of movies and each ahve their favourite film characters (weird idea I know), one unit loves horror films, one loves action films. Whether I really have the time to do it we will see but I am ever confident!

Ru x

Thank you for all the kind words!

Nice summaries! I read the whole thing . It seems like you either did really well, or had some bad luck and struggled... I guess with a lot of land raiders it's going to be like that, since losing one is a pretty big hit.

I really like your idea for your next army . Can't wait to see pics! Especially of the "horror movie" inspired nob squad
