Ok so here we have this



'This' to be precise , is a freehand design I did for a Salamander Succesor Army . My question is ..

How do you think it looks . I cant let you see the rest of the model , becouse its far from being finished So what do you think of it by itself ?

I can tell its fire, but i recomend black lines around the flames to make pop out more.

Hmm .. black outlines ? Should I do that with paint or the same pen i used to draw it with ?

Along the lines of the black outline, notice Darius has painted the flames over a black base. If you were to single out that kneepad in black before adding flames, the contrast would help them "pop" more.

You have a good start on flames.

A few things you need to work on:

Try and make your fades more gradual. You have a lot of start contrast going on there, which is ok, but it needs intermediate colors.

Mix paint! Don't get stuck with the colors that are in the bottle. The only way to make a flame (and any fade) look good, is to mix paints to obtain the intermediate colors.

Make sure you're thinning your paints well. When your doing 5 layers of differnt shades, it makes a big difference if they are thinned down or not.

Like the execution. I would reverse the collor palette (i.e. yellow at the base, dark red at the top).

Piousman is correct.

The hottest part of the fire will be the lightest. start with red over the entire area of the flames, then gradually work down from red, to orange, yellow and even a little tiny wet blend of white at the bottom...

not quite the same scale, but I just finished a mural that had a couple comets. I used that style, but used some neon colored paint to make it pop. neon yellow from apple barrel type paints used in small amounts might make the flames brighter, but use a little white to tone it down..

Its good but needs an outline. Its also too red. Use diferent colours such as orange, yellow, red etc. Jester's and Piousman's are good ideas to follow too.

Well , i guess i'll go die now ..

I mixed the white to a stage where it was a crossover of a wash/extremely vatered down paint .. it ruined the whole thing and i had to start over ..

Damn it ..
