I don't get whats so special about them. Monks in space... not those cool martial arts monks which wear orange and set themselves on fire but the type which wear brown robes, carry books around instead of weapons and prefer to hang out in a church and graveyards instead of in combat.
Dark Angels are a normal codex chapter but they like to paint themselves in black, white or green depending on their specialty. The Ravenwing are basically like a mini force of White Scars.
I like every army in 40K but I just don't see the point in there being Dark Angels Space Marines, I would like to know what makes them so appealing to some people.

Ravenwing have their AV14 landspeeder apparently. Although I agree somewhat, Dark angels are underpowered considering the current space marine codex. Edit: Lots of people have been playing Dark Angels for a long time, because they like their story. Their hunt for the fallen and such. They also have the old apothecary, which is a bit better than the current one, especially if you run deathwing. You shoot at the terminators for an entire turn, and force a wound! "Apothecary."

Deathwing. Pure and simple reason to play Dark Angels. I have 32 Terminators including a Master of the Deathwing, an Interrogator-Chaplain, an Apothecary, and a Banner-Bearer: all in Terminator armour and all Fearless. They pass all morale checks, cannot be pinned, and will not stop until the enemy is dead. Half will teleport in on the first turn in a Deathwing Assault. The other half teleport in where needed later. Deadly. They are painted green (except for the Chaplain and Apothecary) because they belong to an Unforgiven chapter called the Deathwing Crusader Legion. Love'em.

Yeah, I won't tell you everything that's wrong with that sentence.
Dark Angels are the first legion of Space Marines and have some special rules, like being able to take Terminators and Bikers as troops. Much of the Dark Angels codex has been made obsolete and redundant by the vanilla Space Marines codex, unfortunately. I'm a supporter of combining their codex with the Blood Angels codex for Codex: Angels of Death like back in 2nd edition, but that'll never happen I'm sure.

Seems a little like a flame-bait question but what the hell...
I play them because I like them. I like the fluff, I like how they look but most importantly I have fun playing them. I don't need the cheesiest army or the perfect army list. I play against friends most of the time and I have good time. I suppose if i was doing GTs I'd be crying in my beer but I don't, so I won't.
I like the White Scars too but I hate painting white. BLEH!
For me, it's about having fun and enjoying the army I've poured money and time into.

Good answers..
What really confuses me is the robes. 7 foot guys in thick armor....wearing robes, like their trying to hide the fact that their space marines or using it as extra armor

Think about it. They wear dresses and feathers, march into battle with their midgets and have a dark secret they never ever, ever talk about. And they piss off Space Wolves just be existing. I think the reason here is obivious.

The Dark Angel. by Lionel Johnson
"Dark Angel, with thine aching lust
To rid the world of penitence:
Malicious Angel, who still dost
My soul such subtile violence!
Because of thee, no thought, no thing,
Abides for me undesecrate:
Dark Angel, ever on the wing,
Who never reachest me too late!
When music sounds, then changest thou
Its silvery to a sultry fire:
Nor will thine envious heart allow
Delight untortured by desire.
Through thee, the gracious
Muses turn To Furies, O mine Enemy!
And all the things of beauty burn
With flames of evil ecstasy.
Because of thee, the land of dreams
Becomes a gathering place of fears:
Until tormented slumber seems
One vehemence of useless tears.
When sunlight glows upon the flowers,
Or ripples down the dancing sea:
Thou, with thy troop of passionate powers,
Beleaguerest, bewilderest, me.
Within the breath of autumn woods,
Within the winter silences:
Thy venomous spirit stirs and broods,
O Master of impieties!
The ardour of red flame is thine,
And thine the steely soul of ice:
Thou poisonest the fair design
Of nature, with unfair device.
Apples of ashes, golden bright;
Waters of bitterness, how sweet!
O banquet of a foul delight,
Prepared by thee, dark Paraclete!
Thou art the whisper in the gloom,
The hinting tone, the haunting laugh:
Thou art the adorner of my tomb,
The minstrel of mine epitaph.
I fight thee, in the Holy Name!
Yet, what thou dost, is what God saith:
Tempter! should I escape thy flame,
Thou wilt have helped my soul from Death:
The second Death, that never dies,
That cannot die, when time is dead:
Live Death, wherein the lost soul cries,
Eternally uncomforted.
Dark Angel, with thine aching lust!
Of two defeats, of two despairs:
Less dread, a change to drifting dust,
Than thine eternity of cares.
Do what thou wilt, thou shalt not so,
Dark Angel! triumph over me:
Lonely, unto the Lone I go;
Divine, to the Divinity "
Use thine aching lust for the Emprah... This poem was at least the inspiration for their name. Personally, I think it explains the dresses and the closeted nature of the chapter.

All smurfs are monks in space. You have to know their fluff. Hunters of the Fallen, the Deathwing, their organization, they are actually more akin to the Crusaders of the Medieval times.

First of all, Shaolin Monks don't set themselves on fire, I think you're refering to an incident involving a Buddhist Monk, who was making a political statement.....
Second of all, to ask "whats the point of Dark Angels" invites the response, whats the point in anything to do with WH40K? are you specifically looking for a deeper meaning to the Chapter or simply why anyone would play them.....if its the latter, then why does anyone play any Chapter in WH40K, surely its because something about that Chapter appeals to them.
You also mention the "robes", but if you find that amusing or offensive, check out the surcoats worn by the crusaders, these would sometimes include a hood, and its simply my opinion, but I believe this is what the Dark Angels attire is based on, very similar to the Black Templars....

Ah Buddhist monk...crazy stuff. Do you know if the statement worked?
Dont mean to offend anyone but the Dark Angels just seem to represent the emo side of the Imperium, wear dark armor, will attack anyone, have a big secret, really depressing kind of atmosphere which I think can appeal to certain type of people. Was either the Dark Angels or the Rainbow Warriors Apart from people being able to relate to them I don't see any great fluff, paint job, special characters or campaigns. I'm sure not every Dark Angels player shares that stereotype but I don't see anything else to them.

Dark Angels aren’t boring. I think they are very cool and (very) competitive.
I love them!
In which army you can field fearless outflanking Bikes and Attack bikes and they count as scoring leaded by an AV14 Landspeeder?
In which army you can choice mixed fearless termi squads as troops choice and will do a Deathwing assault?
And the best is, that Ravenwing and Deathwing will complete another!
That’s rock on the battlefield.
The fluff and the Minis are also cool.

Gulliman's and Dorn's chapters are liked for their disciplined ranks, efficentcy and loyalty; Fernis's, Khan's and Sanguinious's chapters are liked for their aggression and brutality. I agree with the OP, for such a popular chapter The Lion's angels is woefully underdeveloped, and way too emo. Their chapter rules don't develop their story line but instead create an uber powerful extremly unbalanced army which is used as a reason to keep them around. Even their back story about searching for their lost kin means that they are more likley to fight the Imperium then to serve it. They can't seem accomplish this simple task in 40,000 years even with their Ravenwing and Deathwing companies. Another thing, The only useful part about this chapter are the two companies, that's all anyone ever plays. Is the rest of the chapter sitting around in power armor and robes with their thumb up their butt?
I think that especially with the loyalist chapters you have to find the one that reflects yourself and this is what annoys me the most about the Dark Angles, it's the people they reflect. Me personally I play Imperial Guard but have a Black Templar chapter because they reflect me.

Well, apparently Dark Angels used to be American Indian flavored, explains all the feathers, especially the wing ones on the back of the bikes. So, back then the Dark Angels would have been cool.
As for the monks, the most famous self-immolating monks were in Vietnam protesting the government that the U.S. was propping up (there are some pretty disturbing pictures and videos of this). However, I'm pretty sure there are some monks that have done this in the past couple of years.
