That's my fledgling Imperial Guard army. The trooper models are all Elysians. Just looking for general opinions and suggestions. I'm a newbie, and I like to learn.

Specifically, if you could suggest some useless upgrades that I took, I'd want to add a regimental advisor to the command squad, probably.

Have a look at some of the other IG lists on this site that describe themselves as 'air cav' or similar. They tend to use only a few, very functional upgrades (ie weapons)

Basically, you want to give your veterans 3 of the same special weapon, and no heavy weapon. That's it usually. Maybe the demolitions upgrade, but don't take the grenadiers upgrade. It's overpriced even for footsloggers, and mounted troops should be protected by their vehicle or at least given cover by its' smouldering wreckage.

Valkyries should probably be run naked, or with just MRPs. Giving it all the weapons is overkill, especially since the lascannon and MRPs do completely different jobs.

CCS, same as the vets, give it 4 of a special weapon and turn it loose, don't overburden it.

Stormtroopers are usually considered grossly overpriced, the most popular way to use them is as a squad of 5, with 2 meltaguns - their reliable deep strike entry makes them good for dropping in and blasting tanks.

Scout sentinels are probably best given an autocannon or a lascannon, maybe a HK missile as well. Nothing more. In every GW codex every printed, upgrades for super-light vehicles have been badly overpriced, and the IG codex upholds this law.

Vulture Gunship, I don't own any Imperial armour books, but it looks pretty overupgraded to me. Be aware that if you're walking into a store or something and playing a game against some random bloke, he may be unwilling to play against a forgeworld unit (forgeworld units usually seem worse than normal to me, but I guess people are wary of playing against things they have no experience of)

  Good luck with the army!

Welcome to the joys of AirCav!

The first major point when designing an army is to think of the role you want each unit to play. At the moment, you've gone for the jack-of-all-trades type squad. This means that your units will essentially be wasting some of their potential each turn.

To that end, I'd suggest losing some of your upgrades in favour of others. For example, if you want an anti-heavy infantry squad, then plasma guns and an autocannon team are your friend. Anti-horde- flamers and a heavy bolter.

For your Valks, MRPs chew through infantry, so your lascannon will be wasted, but your Heavy Bolters will still be effective. Your Vulture has a good defined role with its weapons fitting, but I would reconsider Illum flare, Infared Targeting and Armoured cockpit- unless you're playing regular night-fighting missions, they're really not worth it, and armoured cockpit is ineffective in my experience.

The camo netting on your sentinel is similar-largely ineffective in actual game situations.

My final change would be MORE TROOPS! I tried running a list with 2 Vet squads when I started, and they dropped like flies. I lost half a dozen games simply because my opponent concentrated on neutralizing my troops quickly, leaving me with no scoring units.

  Anyway, hope that helps!

Good suggestions! Thank you. I will specialize my squads more, and try and add some more troops. (Elysians are expensive!)

Both of you have said that having the las cannon on the Valk is a waste. Are Multi-lasers a better pair with the multiple rocket pods? I wanted the lascannons just in case I had to take a shot at a heavy.

Yes, the Multilaser would fit much better. This is an example for the "mistake" you made through all of your choices (it's not a mistake indeed but you could get more efficiency by doing as follows)
The Valkyrie, especially when armed with MRPs is heavily armed anti-infantry. Taking the lascannon gives you two things: One additional dead model when firing infantry, where a ML could cut down three. Or you could fire at a tank, wasting the shots of your MRPs and Heavy Bolters as their strength won't even be able to penetrate the armor.
Same for your veterans. Want anti-tank? Give'em three meltaguns. Anti-infantry? 3 Flamers oder GLs the way to go. Thus you get the maximum effect when using that unit for what it should. I think you get the principle.
Still there are several choices in different Codices often praised for their versatility. Don't let them bother you, there's no such thing for Imperial Guard (not one that could keep up efficiency while being versatile at least)

Just wanted to echo what others have said.....

  1. The LC on the Valkeryies is a bad idea...Change it back to Multi-laser.
  2. Your Vet squads are all over the place. Trying to make IG squads good at alot of different things just makes them good at nothing but dieing. Pick a role for each unit and then max out its potential for that purpose.
  3. I agree that Stormtroopers are overpriced. And also you are better off picking a purpose for them and sticking with it. Go 2 meltas, or 2 plasmas, or 2 GLs but dont mix and match or they will just be half-ass at everything instead of good at one thing.
  4. I'd drop the power-weapons unless you really, really, really can't find anything else to spend the points on, and I can think of alot better uses for the points.
  5. Check out some of the other IG lists and the comments on them. There are some other older threads with Air-Cav lists on them that have been playtested and vetted...Try one of those as a starting point.
  6. The Vulture may give you some grief because it has been my experience that alot of people won't play you because you're using an IA rules model....and then a majority of the ones who do agree will whine and cry that you "cheated" if they lose to you. your call, but I prefer to not deal with the headache.

  Good Luck and Good Hunting!

Thanks for all the tips! I'll reconfigure my infantry squads and Valks.

One other question, can Valks and vendettas be included in the same squadron?
