I've been around here for a few months, and I've learned a ton. I am working on the last part of a small Tyranid contingent, but I thought I'd hold off until the new codex before buying any more.

So I ended up with a CSM battleforce box and a box of CSM termies. These are my first SMs of any kind let alone CSMs, and my first vehicle. I want to get this right. I have perused many articles and I have the codex, but could one of you learned disciples of chaos give me some advice before I make a mistake that will have me heading for the Simple Green?

Is it common/mandatory/idiotic/necessary to mix gods? What about chapters?

Is the Black Legion sort of a catch-all when you are comining disparate groups?

Thanks in advance.

Wow,talk about bad timing for getting into CSM (just my opinion),as many "vet" Chaos player will tell you,the curent CSM codex is not Chaos finest tome, however I will atempt to give what answers I can.

Is it common/mandatory/idiotic/necessary to mix gods? What about chapters?..actualy there is no "right" answer here concerning the curent codex rules wise,so if mixing gods is your thing, feel free to do so.
The "lash list",a mixed list of MOS Daemon princes ,Nurgle Plague marines (Khorne Berzerkers) and Oblits is comman place (although it leaves a bad taste in some peoples mouth, myself included).
As far as Black Legion being a catch all,IMO they are the only Legion that the curent codex represents, and thus, you could include any/all units you wish to (within FOC peramiters).Personaly I hope GW will eventualy release a "Legions" codex/codices,thus bringing a bit more flavor back to Chaos.

I agree, they've watered down the new codex. Just out of intrest Fitzz, why are they the only legion the new codex represents? They have about 2 pages of fluff lol.

Anyway. Go with Black Legion. They're the best anyway.

I respectfully disagree with Fitzz, however I am hardly a veteran CSM player. I have found they are hard as nails, whatever legion or cult you choose to play.

I love my CSM, and frequently mix and match legions & cults - however doing this will subject you to much whining (but this is the interwebs, where whining is an artform).

If you are fluff concious, black legion is the safest, as you can mix and match your Khorne & Tzeentch units, and justify it with the fact that 'everyone loves Abbaddon' (that would make a good sitcom). I started with Black Legion and Khorne, and Ive expanded to Plague marines, Tzeentch thousand sons, and Alpha Legion.

If you are a gamer, play a few games using the different cults before you paint them - so you can find a style that you like.

If your a painter feel free create your own legion - or use one of the ones from the front of the chaos book. Check the Chaos gallery for paintjobs you like, and try to emulate them. If you need assistance, send a message to the person who posted them - most would be happy to help!

Best of luck!

My reasoning as to why The Black Legion is the only "Legion" the curent codex represents is simply due to army builds, using the avaiable units/rules one can still create an army that acurately depicts a Black Legion force ( Chaos undivided/mixed gods/mixed troops/daemons etc) ,IMO no other "Legion" can be accuratly depicted with out alot of MON,MOS,MOK,MOT nonsense, basicly the new dex should have been called Codex: Black Legion and the spikey angry marines.

I don't disagree that one can build some powerful armies (most very alike) using the current codex,my point is that the current codex lacks alot of the flavor of the previous ones, and that when it comes to honestly depicting Legions ( Death Guard,World Eaters etc) it falls flat except where the Black Legion is concerned.
That being said, for the time being, under the current codex Black Legion/renegade chapters would be the deriction I would advise the OP to go in his painting/force selection.

Build what you want, how you want. The guy who wrote the codex said too.

True he did say just that,he just neglected to include some of the elements to do so in his Codex.

Thanks for the advice!

My plan was actually to have a fairly unified looking army, and i wasn't sure if that was not fluffy.

Considering even the cult armies align themselves with other legions and warbands, you can paint your models all the same colour if you wanted - or just do one bit (like the black shoulder pads on the Zerkers in the codex).

I do have to agree that a lot has gone out of the CSM codex inthis past edition sadly, BUT that being said for those more unfluff linkeminded players it's great. That said I have been playing mine for almost 10 years now and a couple of things I love most is the overall abilities of them. The fact that now I can shoot with a bolter and then charge with CCWS is great, and especially for me being as I love to field lots of troops. Personally as my post name implies I am a huge fan of the Emporers children and a devout follower of the slaaneshi ways. This follows into the more hedonistic persona that I think is cool and fun to live out in a game rather then real life. For those more war minded Khorne has a strong and in my opion the strongest following of chaos players out their. Nurgle would definately be next with the disguting genre that so many horror film lovers like, and fits into that crowd more then others. Tzeencth well.... No idea how to classify those people as well... I personally have no taste for the changer of ways following. All in all if you dont like those try looking on the 40k lexicanum about specific history's of each legion(notice legion NOT chapter please) and if you like the backround go with itBest way to start honestly

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!
