Subject: HE Champions with magical gear?

Hello all,
I recently played against a Dark Elf army, and the sneaky git put the Ring of Hotek on his Cold One Knight Champion. I have been thinking about this, and was wondering if it seems tactically sound to put our own useful gear on champions?
Ring of Vaul's Unmaking on a White Lion or DP champion?
Dragon Horn on a Sword Master Champion?

I believe the ring is an arcain item and only avaliabel to wizards.
The only good ones to do so are the +1 to go first and the 'roll 3D6 and pick the lowest for leadership' items. possibly the magical attack item if you know you will need it.
The best one is talisman of loec on a sword master champ. Challenge out a char and you can put a serirous hurt on him. Who cares if you take a wound, your going down anyways and it doesnt count to combat res.

It can work, it depends on the item and the type of champion involved... there was a time when all Champions were still characters and could take any magic item. Had quite some fun with that against my brother's High Elf characters (black gem of gnar was a... well, gem)

The skein silver if you have a small number of deployments for a +2 to roll off for 1st turn.
Also the item that makes all attacks in a unit magical, on dragon princes, then go forest spirit or banshee/wraith hunting.

my favorites are
1)skiensilver on anyone, usually ends up on my PG champ
2)Talisman of Loec on sword master champ
3) Amulet of Light on DP champ (gives unit magical attacks)
4) Gem of Courage (especially useful on White Lions)
5)Helm of Fortune on DP champ if BSB is in unit. He can take a challenge with a 1+ re-rollable and does not like to die, while the BSB can use Battle Banner to rack up CR.

Agreed on the Skeinsliver. Worst case, you effectively deny the opponent his +1 to first turn. Best, you get +2 to your roll for first turn.
Considering how fragile the High Elves are, denying a turn of shooting/magic before you get to move is pretty critical.

To be the devil's advocate there are some times when it is better to go second. Usually the enemy has little shooting (or its 24" move or shoot and you deploy correctly) and you have a decent enough magic defense for their magic offense. If that is the case then i sometimes like to choose to go second and grab table quarters as well as make otherwise ridiculous charges (oh my flank is 2" away from your hammer unit, good thing you dont have another turn )
Saying that i think i try to grab 1st turn 90% of the time, especially when i take a good amount of shooting (all but my 1999 list)

Point - but either way, it gives you the priority in choosing to go first or second.

I tried out the amulet of protection today. thats the one that makes you immune to fire, and provides MR 1.
It seemed to work, as a cheapish way to give me some MR.
If your wondering what the unit had. . .
Total Points: 720
20 x Sword Masters
-Full Command
-Champion has Amulet of Protection
-Banner of Balance
-395 points. . .
Level 2 Mage
-Seer Staff, Power Stone
-Unseen Lurker
-185
Korhil
-140
