Subject: Battle wagon, or Land raider? To convert or not to?

So I just picked up this pre-assembled and primed land raider off ebay. I've play tested it a bit and found it really helps my DH/ SM army. I never got to use one until now, and unsurprisingly they rock. However, my problem is that I'm trying to focus on my Ork army right now. I really could use some battle wagons in there and I like converting stuff, but my friends, family and girlfriend say to just leave it as is and put it in my Space marine/ daemon hunter army. So I'm gonna post some pix of my previous looted wagon conversion and see if dakka has any faith in me. Should I convert this land raider into a battle wagon or start painting it for SM?

I'm thinking of kit bashing it with an actual battlewagon and using some of the same techniques as I did with my boomwagon, ie. sheet metal, greenstuff and plasticard. I'm not sure how I'm gonna make it open topped or how I'll do the deffrolla though. I'm just really torn because i have a full SM army on the way soon. Then again I can always buy another land raider and put it together myself, (the guy I bought this one from really loved glue apparently). I'm just really indecisive.
Before I start tearing this thing apart I need to figure out what is going on it and where, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna strip the heavy bolters down into big shootas, convert the SM popping out of the top into an ork using a stormbolter/big shoota and put orks hangin out the sides where the lascannons are. Making this open topped has me stumped though.

Convert. That's what I say. I made my Battlewagon from the chassis of a Land Raider. Couldn't be happier with it.

Ok, heres what Im thinkin to make this thing open topped:
Putting a wall around the perimeter of the top, having the boyz ride on top of it.

Or cutting off some of the roof:

LOL these are by far my worst work with paint since 95.
@pinkeye: You don't have a pic do you? I'd like to see it for inspiration.

I like the ideas for it. Ill be doing some landraider converting here in the near future as well.
Firstly, if your going to make it an open topped wagon like they normally are, Id suggest NOT hacking up the front, as the battlewagon has the access point at the rear of the vehicle. Id cut the rear back (yes even the engines) and leave a cab in the front for the drivers. You can easily make some exhaust sticking out else where and possibly even a motor all its own.
Id also get rid of the lascannons on the thing, as those look far to imperial to be left on.

Thanks Kingcracker, I hadn't thought of that. I think I'll cut the back portion out starting at the gunner. I'm sure I can find a use for the engine later on. BTW I don't plan on keeping the entire lascannons on, but I do plan on keeping their housing, for a platform that big shoota boyz can stand on. I may make them into little crows nest things like the right side of my boom wagon. Does anyone know of a household object that makes a good deffrolla? Also I forgot to mention I got this thing for only $22.00!

$22 is a pretty good deal lol.
There are a few things that make decent deff rollas. Those weird hair rollers that women have work rather well. Also remember you dont have to make it a round rolly thing. Ive been thinking of making one either look like the blades froma snow blower, or possibly hedge clipper blades. Ive thought of making one look like one of those mine field sweepers from WW2. Many ideas that are "outside the box" are usually perfect for Ork things
Good luck man

Convert it. I wonder would the cab of a battle wagon fit between the treads on a land raider.

i really wish i had read this a few days ago... i have just about finshed converting a land raider into a battlewagon. i cut out the lascannons, keepong one to turn into a zzap gun to mount back on one side, turned the two heavy bolters into two big shooters which i have mounted on one the sides instead of the lascannons, in a crows nest type formation. (not enough room from a grot or ork gunner though)
have used an old space marine vindicator cannon for the boomgun and plan on mounting another big shoota and rokkit launcha on the roof behind a plasticard ish front wall. i cut away the top hatch and other side doors, (made it look like burna buys welded through) and discovered on one of the side hatches behind the door is a tool rack, with the addition of a plasticard plate this is gonna become my grot riggers hidy-hole and on one side was sliding doors. (an access point perhaps?) btw mine has the ard case rule so wont need to make it open topped. new to this website but will post pics asap
