I know that this shouldn't go here, but this specific forum topic gets more traffic than the off topic forum. (I hope you can excuse this for just tonight MOD's)

I have a simple request for the folks here on Dakka:

I am a member of the Canadian Military, and, as you should know, tomorrow is Remembrance Day. I just ask that tomorrow, at 11am whatever you time is, that you take a minute to reflect on the troops that have lost their lives serving in the line of duty. I don't want this to turn political. It's just a simple request from an Airman. Lest we Forget.

This is not meant to be a political response but I would add that we should reflect on what exactly we might forget but for Memorial and Remembrance Days. We take time out not just for some shallow hero worship to make us all feel warm and fuzzy but to remember how serious the danger we call upon the men and women of our armed forces to confront actually is--a reminder that we shouldn't needlessly throw their lives away whether in combat or after their return home.

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me--
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
~Martin Niemoller

While his poem was written about the actions of the Nazis during WWII, it has deeper meaning that is timeless.

The tree of liberty must constantly be refreshed by the blood of patriots and tyrants.
~Thomas Jefferson

Let us remember the soldiers that have stood up to defend this nation (and others!), its citizens , and its ideals (Constitution and bill of Rights). They have answered our country's call, and have sacrificed, so that other don't have to.

I agree with Manchu, it is to remember what was sacrificed for what we have today. Something people sometimes take for granted.

Lest we forget.
