It's a very cool game. Unfortunately I don't have a pic of my skaven...only 2 of 17 are painted (badly). If this is your first campaign I would start with a simple warband...skaven (for the powergamer inside you) or reiklanders (for their "can do everything well" style of play).

I'm sure you will get some better responses than me since I'm a bit rusty.

Good luck

After seriously considering both...I ended up going for Necromunda.

Though I don't have any experience with each, it seems character progession in Necromunda would be more amusing than in Mordheim, being that Mordheim you pick your skills so...it's more predictable and hence (in my book anyway) a bit more boring. But, not by a whole lot, as everyone plays for different things.

Though, I would play Mordheim more if DE had an official list (as I already have some Dark Elves).

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Well they do have unofficial lists (they are considered overpowered so they aren't official).

Both games are great. Our gaming group did them a while ago and both were extremely enjoyable for all.

there are 3 power gamer bands, shadow elves, lizard men, and most of all skaven.

for fun take the outlaws or circus of chaos.

2 bands dont do to well though, dwarves and vamps, the first because it takes a while to build up a decent band and some of the missions are an auto win for the opponent, the second because only the vampire gets stronger over time, and the rest fall behind.

hope that helps.

Character progression can be pretty linear (everyone gets Step Aside first, etc), but it doesn't take any fun out of it for my group so far and we've played 4 campaigns over 5 years.
These are two of my warbands. The Skaven photo doesn't have any of my verminkin (they're not painted and I want to redo all of them). I'll probably be replacing all the rats since that warband is almost 10 years old. Undead are my favorite so far. Currently working on Shadow Elves using Reaper minis. Might do Ostlanders after that - not sure yet.

Dwarven Treasure hunters are actually a very solid warband. Max. heroes plus as many cheap as possible support models means very good income and a rather solid line.

Solid sure, im just saying they need a bit more time to grow than most other warbands, and some missions really punish the dwarves. (treasure hunt and warpstone hunt to name 2) i also have a Drwaf band, and i found it was a bit slow to start. some R&F had just a dagger.....

looking at the skaven warband here, i see its what? 6 characters, 1 rat ogre and 5 giant rats.. very different but cool way to go.

I do run verminkin actually, and I'm a big fan of swarming the enemy with rats so I always try to max out my warband. I stated that I didn't include my verminkin in the photo above because they are primed but unpainted. Also, I just don't like the modeling job I did on them (they were some of my very first models). I'm planning on overhauling my entire warband eventually. I'll probably use models from the current Skaven blister packs (Deathmaster Snikt, etc) to replace my heroes, some Reaper giant rats (as I don't like the current GW giant rats), and some clanrats my roommate is generously donating for my verminkin since he's probably gonna redo a lot of his Clan Skryre army when the new models are released.

Agreed on the dwarves, but not about the Undead comment. My first campaign with them I went undefeated. I think it all depends on how you play. Also, Dregs do get better. Sure they start off as the worst heroes in the game, but they will improve quickly if they don't die. Having a ghoul get lad's got talent is pretty sweet as well. On top of that - they can choose from a decent selection of hired swords. For me and my zombies it's all about screening and taking maximum advantage of fear. In my current campaign (which ends tomorrow night I believe) I've been playing Undead and I'm about 12 and 6 on wins/losses. Not too shabby.

Having fought Possessed quite a bit recently, they seem to be one of the best (original & official) warbands in terms of raw power.

I'm also wondering about Empire in Flames. To me it seems like it adds a lot of rules to a game that already has too many rules issues.

I would highly recommend using what's available (and there is a LOT to choose from). Writing your own warbands up and using unofficial or experiemental warbands is really up to you and your gaming group. Mine allows unofficial warbands with no question, but experimental is subject to review. I would check http://www.mordheimer.com/index.htm. They have a pretty comprehensive list of stuff, including an unofficial Tomb Guardians warband. Please keep in mind the scale of WFB and Mordheim are slightly different with the former having some pretty epic stats that might be very unbalancing in a Mordheim setting.

Empire in Flames brought the combat out of the city, and was the first push for non mordheim warbands, as far as the rules went though it had a few silly ones that no one still uses to this day, as well as a bunch of experimental rules.
Id use the items lists, the war bands and hirelings, but not much else. either way its background and a free d-load so we cant really gripe

AS in most things a good mix is better, most war bands cant have every model with a ranged weapon, but take as many as they can, id say plan to take a maximum of ranged weapons. For warband creation try and get bodies some type of weapons that are cheep.
Typically i take a unit with slings, and another with club and sword, still another with sheild and spear. but each of the henchmen groups will get slings as soon i can. (i play skaven mostly. )

Long Bows are good, especially with Hunting Arrows (fire arrows are more annoying than anything, but I guess they have their uses). I'm not too keen on short bows, but if it's all I had available I'd use it. Slings are cheap and effective, and crossbows are nice for the 4 STR.

Hey nice warband, I just played my first game of mordheim and lost all my guys but for my leader who killed a hole warband by him self it was really awesome but I found out that Tomb Kings suck really bad at shooting. I will never use bows again, I'll just use spears & shild and swords. That reminds me my leader had two swords and was awesome with them.

thanks for all the posts too

Heh nice...If you are playing a campaign keep in mind that if you lose 25% or more of your warband you can voluntarily rout at the beginning of your next turn. Might sound wussy, but it's better than permanently losing heroes.
