What is the best Crisis Configuration? I have heard many good things about the Fireknife (Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod, and Multi-tracker) and the Deathrain (Twin-linked Missile Pods, and flamer) so dakka what is your opinion on this matter?

Quoted from "The Defenestrator":
"Yes, I don't buy into the goody goody image the Tau PR machine has churned out . They're all dirty cold-blooded space-communists if you ask me! Besides, their shiny, selfless "we love everyone for the Greater Good" vibe is so unfitting for the "lulz we're all badass jerks" future of 40k. GW needs to play up their cold, calculating, "join us or die, and probably still die anyway" Borg-y style. That's just me of course."

This has been covered a bout ten thousand times here in tactics ; the overall consensus is that Death Rain is pretty awesome.

There is no best. Both are fine but it really depends on the rest of your army. I often take both.

Twin-linked flamers & fusion guns. The best anti-infantry suit, when within optimal ranges.

If you're going to go with a HQ unit, its not quite even ground, because all of them can get hard wired multi's. Also, burst cannons can be a waste of suits, seeing as stealths, devilfish, and hammerheads have burst cannons, and firewarriors, drones and SMS have s5 ap5 like BCs as well
I think a mix of the types might help, because they both have their places. deathrains seem good for long range attacks, or popping rear armour (like if you deep strike behind it), but fireknives would probably be better against things like going up close to space marines, terminators, and necrons, because of their ap2 shots.

Easy answer. There is no best. I do feel the plasma/missile is really good, but if you want a specific role, something suits do very well, set them up for it.

If there was a best configuration, people would have found it out by now. The fact that these threads keep popping up with no conclusion reached is a proof that there is no absolute "best" config. QED.

Oh, there IS a best, I can assure you that. It's the way that I equip mine. The reason these threads keep popping up is because people can't handle my blinding greatness and must turn away, asking for help from others instead.

There is a best configuration for each role. But no over-arching best configuration. The Tau have to specialize. Each unit must be built for a certain role. That's the way they've always worked, that's the way they always will work. Especially because if you need to buy a different unit to fill each role, GW makes more money.

Plasma/missile comes real close to being the best overall.
Sure, if you tailor your lists to fight specific armies, then this may not be optimal.
But Plasma/missile pod is pretty damn good.

Fireknife is over rated.
There, I said it.
If you want to pop transports, take the twin-linked missile pod. If you want to fry marines and terminators pick two of plasma, fusion, or flamer.
Fireknife is a generalized configuration in an army that needs to be specialized to work.

And if I want to do both?
Fireknife.
I prefer a Deathrain and two Fireknife teams in my army.
Fireknife is a generalized configuration in an army that cannot afford to specialize.

The XV8 bring something to the Tau army which you can't get anywhere else in the codex. Massed medium str. and/or low AP.
Heavy armour is taken care of by Railguns and Fusionblaster pirhana's, your troops (ehhr... I mean kroot) kick light infanty ass. That leaves light vehicles and heavy infantry, equip your XV8 to handle them.
I'm no fan of twin-linked weapons on XV8, I'd rather boost my BS with markerlights and fire some more shots (even if those shots are less effective than my primary weapon).

Firewarriors absolutely destroy light infantry. S5AP5 guns at 30" Rapid Fire will take out a load of Orks and GEq. Also at range firewarriors will destroy a unit of Kroot. In close range the Kroot win out simply because they can choose to charge. If you want more durable GEq take stealths although the burst cannon range negates the survivability of them by having them close enough to see them.
Crisis Suits can be specialized for what you will be facing if you know ahead of time what it will be. If you do not know then Fireknives play a pivotal role in being mediocre at anything they face. They are the best generalized unit but fall short when specializing. This is why you will see fireknives taken in a lot of generalized take all comers lists. Usually you can find another set-up or two along with them supporting specialized areas of the lists such as anti-termi or anti- MEq.
