Hey everyone
I am asking all of you that fly with minis and own a 1520 - do you find most lines let you split it and carry on?
I am painting for a person who is trying to decide between 2 432s and one 1520. His concerns are portability and never having to check them. A 1520 would hold more minis for the price, but he *never* wants to have to check them.
Thanks!

general allowed carry on size is 22x14x9 the battlefoam 1520 looks like it will be to large in the width and depth department. While you may still be able to sneak it on dont bet on your ability to carry it on the plane.

The lower case does not fit overhead. I have to pull out the foam trays and have them check the case.

I worked for Midwest Airlines and Great Lakes Airlines. Do not fly with these cases. You will be lucky if yours survives. TSA mandates that you have a TSA approved lock which they can open at any time. They have a bad habit of being rough with stuff and not relocking the case. So, as the luggage belts moves cases around they can drop up to three feet on to other belts and bags. I have seen many cases open up and stuff scattered every where.
The bottom case will not fit as carry on. The top case can fit is some larger jet craft, but the normal domestic passenger jets the top case will not fit and will have to checked as a gate check. This is just as bad since they are loaded just like regular baggage. They are thrown into place and baggage stacked ontop of it. The rigid sides of the 1520 is not strong enough to withstand that. I tested it myself and it failed.
Typical aircraft that it will not fit on as carry-on: Boeing 717 and 737, MD 80, Embrear 170s and 190s, CRJs, Beechcraft 1900.
These are approx 75% of all passenger aircraft in the US.
DO NOT CHECK ANY OF THE 1520 IN AS LUGGAGE!

Also, I forgot. When you buy your ticket and check in the fine print on the ticket and damage to contents caused by TSA during inspection, the loading, transportation and unloaded does not cover items such as gaming figures. So anything that is broken or lost will not be covered by the airlines insurance.
Also, most airlines other than Great Lakes and Southwest Airline you will be charged $50 USD to check in the bag if it does not fit into carry on. The best thing to do with the 1520 is to have USP or FedEx overnight or 2nd day ship the case and figures with insurance.

pro-tip: don't fly unless absolutely necessary.
I'll make the drive if I go to Gen Con. If I'm going coast to coast, i'll fly, but I'm not bringing models with me. no way. never.

I have been told to do this before too but how the hell do you mail it back? Seems like mroe hassle than making your army fit 432s.

What you do is set it up with prepaid postage and put in the box. If you are at a mid-level limited service hotel or better UPS and FedEx will pick up from the front desk.
With the 432s, you still have to be careful with the TSA checkpoint. They will want to inspect the package since the odd shapes. But if you have to take any CRJs, or Turbo Props make sure that the 432s will fit under the seat since A/C's like the Beechcraft 1900 and some CRJs do not have overhead compartments.
Since the 1520 and the 432 have ridgid sides the rampers will use it as a solid base in the cargo hold for the other gate checks. This means you could have over 500 pounds resting on the top of the box. CRUNCH! Telling the ramper or the flight attendant to be careful with the contents will insure that the ramper will chuck it as hard as they can.

It would be nice if the bottom case was actually two cases that zip together, making the 1520 three cases in one.

I know. I bought a 1520 because it was the only case that could hold my ork infantry. However, it is pretty incovenant if you have to travel long distance 250+ miles away and you are not going by car.
