Subject: Leman Russ Vanquisher; a good points buy?

Hey guys,
I'm going for a pretty much all-infantry Guard force (I'm more of a collector than a strategist; I know that all-infantry will probably suck ) but I was wondering if someone could tell me whether or not I should take a Leman Russ Vanquisher? Just, it seems like it'd be a good AT-weapon to have... I'd go for upgrading the hull-mounted HB to a lascannon and not bother with sponsoons? Any thoughts?

The problem with a vanquisher is that it only hits 50% of the time, and a lot of those hits will be negated by cover saves, so you're looking at an expensive tank that gets maybe one good shot per game. Then you roll a 1 on the damage table...
Use meltas or lascannons--much cheaper and more reliably get the kills.

IF! you take a Vanquisher, it's worth it to add Pask and a hull lascannon. That gives you a decent, altho fairly expensive (220) anti-armor platform.

When thinking about sponsons MM is the way to go but it's not really necessary since you'll want to make the most of the main guns range. Altogether the Vanquisher is meh at its best, too expensive for too little impact.

All infantry can work if you take Creed and maybe the outflanking platoon special character (Al reem sp) so you can take enemy objectives. Creed gives you lots of orders with a 24 inch range, the For Cadia order which makes your platoons pretty good in close combat if you give them power weapons to the sarge and commisar and the ability to outflank a unit. Big problem with all infantry is you really need cover. armor save of 5+ is pretty bad.
If your going all infantry the Vanquisher is a terrible buy. Vanquisher BS3 and only gets 2 shots assuming you buy a hull las cannon. Its a better buy to buy las cannons for your infantry platoons and either creed or a second command squad to give them orders so you can join 3 infantry platoons together and issue them a bring it down order on leadership 9 because of the commisar so they get 3 twin linked las cannon shots. This costs you less points and you are buying 30 man blobs with commissar anyway in a all foot list might as well give them las cannons. Yes you can buy Pask for the Vanquisher but that gets even more expensive and 3 twin linked las cannons are still more accurate. Vanquisher is also pretty terrible if you play against another foot list since it lost the ability to fire regular battle cannon shells.

I have played an all infantry force and they are extremely effective. Most opponents expect you to take at least some armour so alot of there anti tank weapons become a waste of points. But yes Creed is a MUST! On a second note I swear by the vanquisher. I have Pask in it with side sponson MM, and his anti tank ability is second to none. There is few things as satisfying as getting penetrating hit on a land raider on turn 1 from across the board, twice if you are lucky. Guard have little to deal with enemy armour at range. Lascannons are disappointing for taking out AV 14. What good is blowing up a land raider with a melta gun when it has already reached your battle line, with an intact terminator squad inside?

-Any terrain containing Sly Marbo is dangerous terrain.
-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake. |
