I'm working on a scheme for my Space Marines. I plan on using Ravenwing symbols as my Chapter icons. Here are two tests I did on B&C's painter.

Are the shoulders better off being yellow or black?

Two problems. 1 - They look too much like Imperial Fists, not necessarily a bad thing but might cause confusion if I try to introduce them to people as my DYI Chapter. The second problem is that I haven't been able to come up with a test in the Terminator painter that I like. I'm not married to the color yellow but I do like the black in the chest/torso vs. other areas of the body.

Any comments or suggestions? Is there another color combination that would work better given the large amount of black in the center/top of the model?

A link to a good Terminator paint would be great, too.

I like both of them actually. It is really hard to pick one over the other, but if my arm was twisted and gummy bears where offered I would pick the black shoulder pads over the yellow ones. Don't ask why because I can't tell you.

The Orks are the pinnacle of creation. For them, the great struggle is won. They have evolved a society which knows no stress or angst. Who are we to judge them? We Eldar who have failed, or the Humans, on the road to ruin in their turn? And why? Because we sought answers to questions that an Ork wouldn't even bother to ask! We see a culture that is strong and despise it as crude.

Personally I like the black shoulders. It doesnt seem like to much yellow.
As for the terminators, you could either do them in white with a yellow/black accent (since generally terminators/veterans get white paint for being veterans) Or you could just reverse the colors. Mostly black, and have the helmets and shoulders be yellow. Something along those lines.

Add my vote to the Black shoulder pad camp . As for Terminators, I think KingCracker's nailed it with the reversed colour scheme

Black :-P It adds some differentiation to the model. I'd also go for the inverted termy scheme :-P

One thing that I'm not decided on yet is the yellow on the helm. It's fine with the yellow shouderpads, especially adjacent to the black tactical arrow on yellow background, but I'm not entirely certain it works when the shoulderpads are black. If I go with an all-black facemask for the bottom Marines, the icons on the shoulderpads tend to "pop" out more on the figure. My worry with an all black helm having it "disapppear" against the black chest and backpack. The only thing I can say for certain is that inverting the helmet colors or making it all yellow looks wrong on the model.

I like the second one better. In either case, they look like Mortifactors. I'm not so sure on the black shoes though.

I can see how they resemble the Mortifactors. Again, not necessarily a bad thing. As for the shoes, I've colored them yellow in my latest color test and I think I agree with you. Making the soft armor black instead of grey puts enough contrast in the lower body so black shoes aren't needed.

In any event, based on previous comments, I've finally settled on a terminator scheme that I don't absolutely hate. I wasn't able to work in the green aquila but again that really isn't as much an issue as I thought it would be. Again, helm color is something to consider. The yellow helm seems more natural but the black helm gives an agressive look to the model. What do you guys think?

The yellow helm would be good if you didn't reverse the colours. The black one looks slightly better. Although, the more I look at it, the more I prefer the yellow helmet.

I think the marines with the black shoulder pads.

And for the Terminator I personally like the softer yellow helmet, but I think the black helmet looks tougher with would better fit the 1st company.

I join the majority here. I prefer the black-shouldered Tacticals and the black-helmeted Termies. What if you used the yellow shoulderpads for veterans; Sgts, assault squads, etc.?

As a side not, I'm not fond of the green chest eagle at all. It's the only splash of green and I think it just clashes.

We're thinking along the same lines for the Veterans, Ghidorah. In fact, I've already been fiddiling around with it in the Painter.

What color would you suggest for the aquila? I've tried making it yellow but I feel it mitigates the black on the upper body too much. Orange lends itself to the same problem. Blue disappears into the black chest. I'd prefer not to use grey/silver as the weapons use Boltgun metal predominately. I'm willing to change it though, so don't think I am unappreciative of suggestions.

Regardless, here is a combat squad based on feedback thus far:

And here is the same squad using yellow aquila.

I'm thinking that I'll use the black-headed Terminator as my Termie Sgt and the yellow as the squad members. Chaplain will be all black except for a yellow aquila. Librarian will be the opposite, all yellow with a black aquila. Company Commander will probably use the same scheme as the vet sgts. I haven't given any thought about the Apothecary yet.

Does anyone know of a painter that has Terminator options or options for Jump Packs/Devastors? I've been using the ones on B&C and those are somewhat limited in what they can do.

I love the idea you have their of giving painting variation to the SGT for the squad. Personally I agree with others that the green if it was a dark green would work, but as it stands to light detracts from the model and forces the eyes to focus fistly upon the green since it's such a off contrast. That said it is a way to get people to notice them more, but I remember reading an article many years ago from a bloke named gareth hamilton I believe in white dwarf. He said the face of the model should always be the first them a person looks at when they see your model hence you want it to stand out more so then the rest. That said I like where your heading.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Okay, I've been talking with a friend about my army colors and he came up with a suggestion regarding the green aquila. After tossing ideas back and forth, here's what we came up with:

Basically the idea is to make the aquila more dynamic using dark and light green in separate sections. A brass or copper metal in the center/top will help link it with the basic yellow while better contrasting with the silver of the bolter.

So, am I heading in the right direction? Way off the mark? Thoughts? Suggestions?

Squad line-up : I'm liking the second (the green aquillas don't look quite right to me)

Terminators : Hmm, stuck now because I like them both... How about yellow helm for the troops, black for the sergeants ? That way you get to use both

Damn ! You ninja'd me with the new pic ! The one on the right looks like a good mix of concepts on the aquilla

Onto the Assault Marines. This is the basic Assault trooper and not the vet. Which jump pack looks best on the model?

I agree. Working with the painter, I decided to NOT invert the backpack colors for the Sergeants. For some reason black exhausts just don't work for any of the tests I did. An all yellow jump pack is even more fail.

So, I'm pretty close to being done. What's left for me is to work out the Librarian, Chaplain, Apothecary, and Techmarine. The Techmarine seems most obvious, use Vet Sgt scheme with metallic arms. The more interesting question is, do I want to work in white for the Apothecary or not?

Attached is the final color test for my army. I think it's pretty locked down except for some possible fiddling with the Librarian/Termi Librarian.

Opinions?

WOW !! Great progression of ideas and I really like how the color scheme has evolved.

I've been struggling with my ideas and have repainted my test model so many times it's mutated into a Great Unclean One !!!

Where did you find all the other Marine images ? I've started using the B&C Marine Painter but where are the Terminators, the Assault Marines, etc ??

Thank you, Breotan !!! I have a direct link to the marine painter and never bothered to go backward into the site. DUH !!

My 6 y.o. daughter was having fun with the Sisters Painter !! Thankfully, no company makes the the colors she selected for her Harlequin Sisters but "A" for effort none-the-less !!

Thanks again !!
