Use GIMP. http://www.gimp.org/ Learn GIMP, Breath GIMP, Drink GIMP... Then get Photoshop and have to learn all the damn shortcuts all over again... after you learn a few more programs, you will end up with a list of like half a dozen shortcuts in your head. Kind of amusing TBTH. GIMP actually is much more user friendly for a beginner. PS can really piss you off sometimes, but GIMP just crashes instead...  . GIMP don't take no guff, but PS is special ops, not beserker status.

Do you use a drawing tablet tblock?
I really need to pick one of those up soon, getting pretty sick of this mouse. DAMN MOUSE! One of those fancy big ones, with the pressure sensitive pen and stuff; that's the ticket. It is kind of funny how much more I have to think about drawing on a computer, compared to good ole fashioned paper.

No, I am not artistic enough to justify buying one... but I have played around with one of the big Wacom Tablets at work. Fething. Awesome.
