It doesn't specifically say it is in the codex. Is it?

Hi, I'm Mike Leon. You may remember me from such totally metal action adventure novels as KILL KILL KILL and RATED R

No, it isn't.

It's not. The errata has changed the p104 suggestion of them being a retinue, to merely being an extra HQ unit.

No

It filfills NONE of the requirement slisted in the BRB for being classified a retinue:

1) it does not say it is a retinue, or
2) the IC is not required to stay with the unit until it is dead

Think about it: Marneus can have *3* of them, and he cant be in all of them!

It simply takes up no slots in the FOC, giving you elite troops without taking up a slot.

It used to say it was a retinue. It doesn't any more.

Actually, Calgar can have 3 Honour Guard. He cannot take a Command Squad

Do both of those criteria need to be met for a unit to be a retinue or just one? Like for warlock or crisis "bodyguards" for example

Either of those criteria would do. The first would mean that the second would apply anyway.

Crisis Bodyguards are a retinue, as they are taken to accompany the character.

Warlock units are not a retinue. You get one per Farseer in the army, but there is no requirement for them to form a unit with that Farseer.

Warlocks? As for Crisis Bodyguards, 'bodyguards' is one of the terms listed as an example of a retinue on p48. The codex states that the character doesn't count as Independent when accompanied by the bodyguard. This perfectly fits with what a retinue is.

Drones on the other hand do not stop an IC from being an IC character. They aren't called bodyguards, retinue or similar. They also aren't a special unit with its own entry to be taken with an IC. A commander forms a unit with his drones that he cannot leave, but meets none of the other characteristics of a retinue.
