I was playing a game this weekend and after my sternguard's kombi meltas destroyed a landraider, my opponent said i could not shoot at the 5 surviving khorne beserkers with the rest of my squad. Is that true ? and If i am shooting with an assault gun that manages to blow up a transport vehicle, can I assault the survivors of that if i am within range ?

All shooting from a single unit is simultaneous.

So the entire unit would be shooting at the transport. You can't shoot some at the vehicle, and then some at the squad that subsequently bails out.

Other units could shoot at the disembarked squad, though.

Edit: And yes, you can assault the survivors.

Both of these are addressed on page 67 of the rulebook, the last paragraph above the 'Dedicated Transports' box.

Along the same lines a unit that buys a rhino....the rhino is taken as an upgrade for a unit so it's one unit? I know I'm pulling at strings I would just like feedback I'm sure that someone in my group will try pulling that.

First paragraph of p135 in your space marine codex, under "Dedicated Transports" answers your question.

The BRB also states that dedicated transports are still separate units. The p93 bottom right example springs to mind.

No, the units are separate. Without my book handy, I can't give you a page number, but when you look at the rules for firing out of fire points, the rule says that the unit in the transport can shoot at a different unit because they are not the same unit.

No, the transport is a separate unit. If it was one unit with the squad, it would have to remain in coherency with them.
