EVENT OVERVIEW
The stars of Mystery Science Theater 3000 are back on the big screen this holiday season with special guest "Weird Al" Yankovic!

RiffTrax LIVE: Christmas Shorts-Stravaganza! will broadcast to movie theatres nationwide on Wednesday, December 16th at 8:00pmET / 7:00pmCT / 6:00pmMT and 8:00pmPT (tape delay). Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy (Tom Servo) and Bill Corbett (Crow T. Robot), now of RiffTrax.com, will zing their wisecracking commentary at a wonderfully warped collection of Christmas shorts for some much needed comic relief.
The evening will feature a collection of brand new and old favorite shorts including the bizarre animated “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” classic commercials and a musical short extolling the virtues of pork.

Huge fan of MST3k, I'll definitely be checking this out.
Can't help but think they formed this after the original creator Joel Hodgson's 'Cinematic Titanic'.

They may deny it but I think there's some kind of rivalry between Joel and Mike since they haven't really worked with eachother post-MS3Tk and they seem to be competing against eachother.

Joel formed CT in 2008 after Jim Mallon turned him down for producing a new MST3K show for the 20th anniversary of the show. Rifftrax started before Cinematic Titanic. Mike, Kevin and Bill have been working the craft they learned on MST3K together for several years now, both as Rifftrax and as The Film Crew. DVDs are available for both. As for competition, that would imply that people who buy one are unlikely to buy the other and that one group would like to defeat the other in some way. Interviews and appearances together such as for the Shout Factory panel at Comic-Con last year don't really support that idea much. From my experience MST3K fans are likely to buy both. Joel was the show's creator and Mike was head writer during most of that time before becoming host as well. Both like to perform so it makes sense they would each have their own projects. As a personal note, you'll notice that the CT website link is part of my signature here on Dakka. I've been a MSTie since season 2 landed on my cable system years ago. I've been to three live CT shows and the last Rifftrax Live theater broadcast. It's all good, though I do have my preference for MST3K with it's creator and early cast intact and there's nothing closer to it these days than a live CT show.

Good points, just seems a bit convenient that both Mike and Joel don't seem to work with eachother on their projects but then again they had different eras of the show.
My personal favorite episode is 'Cavedwellers'...what the hell did I hang glide in here for?
Great stuff, thanks for the heads up - glad that San Antonio is getting some love for a showing of the new stuff.

Actually, it does have something loosely to do with Dr. Who. There are more than a few passing references to Dr. Who in jokes on Mystery Science Theater 3000, where all of history, film history, TV and popular culture get skewered in hilarious references while they "riff" on bad movies. We've got our Rifftrax Live tickets for Dec. 16. Looking forward to it.
