The eye of terror.

Although it's not perfectly explicit in the rules, most people play that any of your units (that can fit) can begin the game in a non-dedicated transport vehicle.

You just can't begin the game in another unit's wave serpent, though you could climb in after the fact.

Sorry, to hijack this thread but in a somewhat related question. If you had a Wave Serpent for guardians who were deployed on the ground turn 1, then turn 2 used that same Wave Serpent is used to taxi around the Harlies, is this legal or would someone say you couldn't because it's a dedicated transport? Some Codexes (sp?) are more restricted on "taxiing" around other squads that the transport wasn't dedicated to, like I think Black Templars.

Some codexes are. Others are not.

That's correct, and i think they even thought it was good enough to be an FAQ.

Q. My Imperial Guard or Black Templar Codex
says that dedicated transports can only be used
by the unit they’ve been bought for. Is that
overruled by the new way dedicated transports
work in 5th Edition?
A. No, if a Codex clearly says that dedicated
transports can only be used during the game by
the unit that bought them, that overrules the
general rule in the rulebook, as normal.
Obviously some armies are stricter than others
about transport regulations!

Point for Gwar and Ridcully. I think I have a better question about harlequins: How do we make them worth taking again?

take some a shadowseer and add 2 farseers. Use them (in cover) to make your farseers near unshootable.

Take a shadowseer and 4-5 Quins, put them at max coherancy in front/cupping a unit of Dark Reapers. Harliquin get veil and Reapers get a 4+ cover if they shoot through coherancy. Oh and make sure to take Crack shot on the Reaper Exarch of course.

I also do a 10 man footslog w/ fusion pistols and shadows seer for giggles sometimes.

You don't like Veil of Tears?

I think a unit of wraithguard being lead by a squad of harlies is quite intimidating. Maybe that's just me, but by the time i can see them they're usually on top of me.

I use veil on every single squad I have, but I feel it's useless to put them in front of other powerful shooting units. Sure the dark reapers or wraithguard will get a cover save, but so will the guys you're shooting at with that high strength, high AP weaponry. Either they're far away being a pest that can be ignored, they're on you doing their job, or they almost get there and get rapid fired to death. T3 with a 5+ save doesn't help much once they receive small arms fire, and usually veil doesn't do much at 12".

You only really get one chance to shoot at them though. Then next turn, even if you killed them, what was behind them unleashes hell. If you didn't kill them, they move out of the way for the shooters, then assault if you're still there.

At least that's the theory.

Harlequins are still a great unit. It's the other CC choices that are lacking.

In real life, at least for me, that theory doesn't hold up well... I just find it a waste to just let a 150 pt. elite unit be sacrificed just to get a few S5 shots in, who will then probably either get assaulted or shot up themselves. I just find that T3 dies much more quickly than I'd like and in the many games I've played with harlequins they're a waste if not going up against something big and singular (daemon prince, tyrant, fex, etc).

I'd like to see a lot of things from 10 years ago come back just because there was so much character back before blandness.

The eye of terror.

Keep them behind your other units for counter-assault. Don't just throw them out there.

Actually if you used the tempest launcher with crack shot your negating giving the enemy a cover save, double blast barrage, and reroll your wound. The setup is a marine slaughter.

That's very true, but what about the other 2-4 35pt. models who don't get crackshot? Aren't you preventing the majority of your very expensive squad from doing their job?

That I'll certainly agree with. I just really don't like how expensive they become, because the basic harlie with nothing is a total waste. They're at least 22 points + another 30 to have something that's decent. Then another 20 for the troupe master. Basically you're paying 140 pts. for 5 T3 models that will die horribly against hordes, have a much worse chance of rending thanks to the new rules, and if they lose might very well run because of small squad numbers.
