Subject: Space Marines v Necrons 1000 -- First ever battle

I managed to get a crapton of Space Marines, and spent an evening at a friend's identifying what I had and threw together a quickie battle at the last second when I realized I could legitimately play with them. (: It's probably a very sloppy list but I wanted to get a game going -quick- and have a bit of fun, rather than making sure I had something that would win. (I didn't.)
HQ: Captain - 100
....Honor Guard - 115
Troop: Tac Squad - 170
Troop: Tac Squad - 170
Elite: Terminator Squad (5) - 200
Elite: Dreadnought w/ ML and TL-LC - 145
Fast Attack: Assault Tac Squad (5) - 100
I don't recall the exact Necron count, but there was:
Necron Warriors
Necron Warriors, Lord w/Res Orb
Immortals
Flayed Ones
2 squads Scarab Swarms
The Dreadnought sat in the back and lobbed las and missiles across the board. The scatter dice LOVED ME and I only got one scatter shot out of five -- and it scattered from one squad of warriors to smack dab in the middle of the OTHER squad. It was beautiful.
The Captain and Honor Guard stayed mostly in front of the Dreadnought, and the Terminators in front of them. The two Tac squads stood on either flank. The Assault squad moved along the side of the board each turn to try closing with the Lord squad.
The Assault squad got killed right before getting into assault range. The Flayed Ones did a deep strike and assaulted one of the Tac squads, taking it out completely. The Terminators got splatted by the Immortals and the scarab swarms.
In the end, I lost. I expected to lose. I'm not stupid, it was my first battle ever. What I did do was have fun, learn a bit about the rules, and learned where to -find- the rules when I was confused. I'm still confused, but I at least know I like the game and can work on refining armies and stuff...

Sounds like a pretty good first game! That's by far the most painless way of picking up the rules and, as you say, learning where the rules are.
Regroup and give 'em hell!

The quick reference guide in the back of the book helps quite a bit when trying to figure out the rules in the beginning. Congratulations on your first game (even though it was a loss).

Thanks! I did learn to love that reference thing pretty fast, it definitely made things go by faster.
Next time, we'll play somewhere that isn't a college dorm lounge area and maybe even have actual terrain! I kept thinking 'Man if there was some terrain around -here-, I could advance around it and stay out of sight until I get in range...'
Seriously starting to dig getting back into this whole wargaming thing. (:

One thing I found works great for generators or high tech farm silos is kool-aid containers. The ones that have all the sugar an stuff already in them. They will obscure a rhino and a lot of other stuff.

Thaaaaaaaaaaaanks. Because that's exactly what I need, ideas on converting simple household items into terrain pieces. And I'd end up painting them too, because I'm neurotic like that.
Now I'm looking around my bedroom going 'I could turn that into...'

Soda cans, Pringles cannisters, washed out and turned upside down.. save your 20oz pop bottle caps and glue them end-on and they can make shipping barrels or 55 gallon drums...
some Happy meal toys work well too... as well as empty CD Spindles.

There is something to be said for the officers of your armies screaming "get behind that klenex box", ""charge that match stick line" it adds a sense of humour to the game, and makes for a very care free game.

"I can envision a world with no war, pain, or strife, were peace is constant, then I envision attacking that world because they'd never see it coming."

- The face of an opponent when you lose five dozen models and say "that's it?", priceless. |

@porkulsime: CURSE YOU. Although the sodabottle caps are a brilliant idea ... I'm now cursing the fact that I took the recycling out yesterday.
@despoiler52: Oh my god. Now you have me wanting to write a story about a battle where the Marines are wondering where the giant kleenex box came from. With pictures.
I have too much to do already, the last thing I need is an excuse to paint something ELSE! Gah...
