Hey guys, I haven't been on in a while, but I've recently had a jolt of 40k fanaticism and decided to re-write my 1500 list. This list is intended to be competitive, but also fun in it's flexibility, high movement, and time-efficiency given my pre-assault turns should only take a couple of minutes tops.

I say that this is a hybrid list in that one half of it incorporates a massive nob-biker unit tooled out to be super-stubborn and super efficient for what I want it to do. The other half of the list are 4 trukkboy units blanketed by the Big Mek's forcefield. I intend on this list to provide two ominous threats that must be dealt with immediately, or else become over-whelmed with a full force of flanking orks.

Let me know what you think.

HQ

(150) Warboss ; Bike, Powerklaw, Cybork Body, Attack Squig

(090) Big Mek ; Kustom Force-Field, 'Eavy Armor

-> 1x Nob (Powerklaw/Kombi-Skorcha/Waaagh! Banna)

(151) Trukk Boys ; 10x Boys, 1x Nob (Klaw, Pole) (Big Mek goes 'Ere!)

I think you've got a very nice list there. No critique from me.

Do you face off against Marine players? When Termies w/ TH/SS became popular, they were one of the most cost effective counter Nob Biker units in the game.

If you don't see them, rock on.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

One major flaw. What happens if you face a mech list (e.g. all competitive lists haha).

You charge up and then realise you have to assault transports... and get shot to death next turn.

So bassicly what im trying to say is, get some lootas already ;-) haha

I don't really define Tau as a primarily shooty force though.
It's a force that places the shot that counts well. They are a force that can move into the best positions for their shots and adds quality to those attacks.

True, everything shoots, but it's generally not a quanitity type of shooting and more quality shooting.

Apart from the fact that is kinda a primarily shooting army ;-), it is one of the most well constructed points regarding tau iv heard in a while.

To the OP:

If you play against TH/SS terminators, simply spend your Nob bikers elsewhere. If you math-hammer out a 12-boy squad of orks in a trukk disembarking and charging a squad of terminators with TH/SS, it goes like this:

Take Dark Angels for example; 215 points for a squad of TH/SS terminators (43 points per model).

I3:
44 Orky attacks, 22 hits, 11 wounds. Terminators fail 1.76.

I1: 3 Terminators strike back with six attacks, landing three, wounding on 2+, killing 2.5 models.

I1: Nob with powerklaw hits with 4 powerklaw attacks, lands two, wounding on 2+, hitting two; Terminators save on a 3+, failing .64 wounds.

In total, you've statistically lost 2.5 models (or 15 points worth of ork boys) in return for killing 2.4 models worth of terminators (or 103.2 points worth of terminators). Round two (and three if needed) will settle it quickly enough, and with your entire army capable of gigantic range, you're assured the assault.

------------------------
In terms of playing against mechanized lists, boarding planks are quite effective, and in case you didn't notice somehow, he has a unit of nob bikers; they're 3" long, and can multi-assault....as much as they wanted.

If the OP turbo-boosts his bikes on turn1 for a 3+ cover save, drops his trukks across the board 12-18", he's set for a turn2 assault anywhere he wants. There's enough powerklaws around to take down pretty much any armor, and no amount of shooting at the orks is going to change that.

Sarigar ~ The way I see it is this: If an opponent has a unit of assault termies with that lay out, I can just swamp them with regular boys. Another thing to keep in mind is that if the nob biker unit has to confront termies, they should be able to reliably drop 2-3 of them before combat just with forcing so many saves with the dakkaguns/kombi-skorchas.

97252783 ~ The boarding planks really help out against other mechanized lists, because it allows me to bust open their troops while mine stay inside the transport, allowing me to get the charge against their troops next turn, regardless if they destroy my transport or not. Lootas are interesting, but I really feel like they would just be fat on this list. It's strength really lies on it's speed and compact power, allowing me to play the refused-flank card in annihilation games, and in objective games; contest and annoy the gak out of my opponent at my whim and will. I MAY consider using lootas in a higher point list, but I really don't think they will be necessary.

Dashofpepper ~ Yeah, nobody gives the basic ork boy enough credit. That's why I feel like a list utilizing a solid mixture of boys in trukks and a solid unit of nob bikers has more of a chance than a pure biker-spam list. It provides the cost efficient, expendable boys which can be cannon fodder for certain units that the nob bikers just have a bad match-up against, and even one unit of nob bikers like I have provided is enough to wreak havoc on the backbone of most armies if left unchecked.

Another question I have for those interested in responding: I am a bit out of the loop as far as what is popular in competitive realms, but I figure mechanized lists are the biggest threats. I feel like I should have a pretty decent match-up against other mechanized lists, but do I have enough to take on horde lists such as orks or nids? The nob bikers should be able to do pretty decently against nids and orks but I don't know if that's enough.

Thanks everyone, for your advice.

You've got the right answer to mechanized lists, which are all the rage: powerklaws, boarding planks, more powerklaws, and a few extra powerklaws.

If you were to do anything differently, I'd encourage you to find room somewhere for a unit of deffkoptas with twin-linked rokkits.

What do you find to be the optimal amount of deffkoptas in a unit?

The only thing I've really considered cutting is one of the trukkboy units, but I feel like having only 3 trukks becomes kind of over-kill with the KFF. The nobs don't really benefit from it as much, and nor would defkoptas or anything else really that I can squeeze in for the point limit. 4 seems like the magic number.

I also don't want to cut much away from the nobs, because as they are now they are geared to take on the most common lay-outs for mirror matched nob bikers. Making them much weaker might be a liability in competitive play.
