I had this idea;

orange and yellow. Orange shirt with yellow armor.

How does this look?
It's only my second ork ever, but I wanted to see how it would look. Still to be painted are another layer of bright colors or two and a lot of metalics. I guess with all that yellow it would be bad moons, but not absolutely necessarily.
I based with white, but I'm not sure I dig it.

You need to clean up the paint lines, were you missed and add another coat of yellow. The red also looks very watered down. Once you do that you need to hit it with a wash of Delvan Mud. Trust me the washes take somthing that looks like crap and makes it look 100 times better as it will fill in those nasty areas you missed. Also go to the Tut page and read up on painting Orks. It will put you on the path to sucsess. If you like that color scheme stick with it and modify the information to talor your needs. It is a very rough mini but not bad for you rsecond try.

I agree with mstersmith... although I will say the ork skin on the arms look really good actually.

Ya the skin does look good. Hit it with some Thraka green. It will make the high lights you have going really pop.

I agree with butlerthepug, the skin looks pretty good. The rest tho, I think you either watered them down WAY to much, Or you need to add another layer or 3 of the color back on there.
And you need to fix how you painted the hair. It looks like you sneezed a wash on it and then left it alone

That reminds me of my Bad Moons

Only one tip from me, stop using gloss paints Edit: It looks like some of the paint you used is gloss paint, I should know because I've had my own bad experience with gloss...gloss enamel even. Otherwise I like where your going with this (and am anxious to see your caution stripes )

The Red is brown, actually. Or Orange, depending on where you are looking.

I was just checking out the scheme, not really concentrating on doing it well. Banged him out in about half an hour, with a bad case of shakes and bleary eyes, so of course it is quite rough.

None of the paint is gloss. That's my white undercoat showing through.

The arms are done in the approved manner, sans the final highlighting, so good eye there. The hair is done almost presisely as you immagined, your Magesty. Again, knocked it out quick without care. I had intended a mix of black and dark blues, when I got around to it. Actually, I can't quite like hair on an ork, and have seriously considered clipping all my hairy ones bald.

The orange and yellow paint is really cheap craft paint in the little plastic fliptop pots, while the green for the skin is slightly better.

Thank you all for your input on this.
Lessons learned:
1. Avoid the bright color schemes till I can afford decent paint.
2. Black base coat will hide more mistakes than white.
3. washes rawk.
4. This here is a pretty nifty community.

Do multiple thin coats of paint to cover up the white bleeding through. It looks terrible, to be frank. There's tons of visible streaks and blotchiness abound. Washes do wonders for every color - I wash all my Orks liberally in Devlan Mud and it's talent in a bottle. I suggest you get some.

If you want to be really lazy, with decent looking table top painted orks... and this is especially helpful for if you have ALOT... almost pure washes over a white prime...

This is what I have started doing for my orks. 2-3 washes of thrakka on skin. 1 wash of badab black on pants (this gives it a nice grey look). 2 washes of devlan mud on the top/shirt. 1 wash of devlan on the boots. boltgun on the metal and either badab or devlan mud on those metal parts...

Im not sure if your absolutely stuck on your color scheme but if you want a nice looking model that takes barely any time to do I would suggest you try it. If you want I can post a few pics of models Ive done using the technique tomorrow.

I definitely recommend a base color, shading color and highlight in that order for all your major colors on the piece. That'll definitely give you some quality paint jobs, no matter your skill level.

When you are doing reds you need a good undercoat. Snakebite Leather works incredibly well for making a red "pop". The same should be true for an orange or a yellow.

If I can take a good photo of it, I will upload one of my DnD mini that illustrates this.

A basic black or dark grey primer will be good for you, the thinner and cheaper the better.

I like the arms!

The large Dragonborn was painted with Snakebite under gore red. The thief in the red cloak had no undercoat. Both over dark gray primer.
