hey Dakka...

finally, i've taken the time to paint a mini just because i wanted to...
i've had this mini waiting to get painted since he was a new release in 2001 (i believe)...

i think this is my first ever termie...
it's hard to remember for sure, but i think that in my 23 years of painting i've never painted my favorite type of Space marine...
[EDIT] i forgot that i painted Tyhpus, so this is my second Termie...

i wanted to try my hand at the "French Style" of painting, with unusual tones and softer edges...
this is my first attempt at some blending instead of layering...
this is my second attempt at battle damage...
my first try was on the white armour of Kor'sarro Khan, and i wasn't able to get the strong highlight that i got to play with here...

painted entirely with P3 paints...
playing with Trollblood Base, Underbelly Blue, Coal Black, White, and Turquoise Ink for the armour was quite fun...

he's off to ebay now...

thanks for lookin'...

cheers
jah

Jaw-dropping! I love your stuff. For someone who hasn't done much battle damage you have definitely produced some amazing results. The face is stunning.

I want to see the axe looking down on it because you can't really see it that well.

Truly stunning mini, mate!

Of course, as an American, that means I must say that soccer sucks, and football (real football... you know, the one where you do everything with your hands) is 10,000 times as good. I mean, football players could probably beat up soccer players, even, because they actually know sports.

Wow thats very very good, id be dead before i could paint that good. I especially like the damage, it makes him look old and battle hardened- which of course he is.

If i had to critizize one thing, and this would be very very very picky, i think the fur could be better. At least thats what the golden demon judges would say.

P.S. Talking of golden demon, why not enter it, im sure it would do pretty well.

Gorgous work would you be willing to share how you did the metallics?

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

i'm glad this guy is getting a good reception...
trying something new is always a bit stressful...

@greydeath: these chips are all painted in with the brush...
i thought that the sponge might be a bit heavy-handed...
i have been using the sponge to do the metals on my Iron Warriors dread, where i don't have to be so precise...

@myrthe: the armour was painted up to a mix of P3 Underbelly Blue and Trollblood base, then the highlights of pure Underbelly were layed down...
once the armour was 75% done, i washed it all with a few very thin layers of Turquoise Ink...
from there, i just went to town with the chips...
i just dabbed Coal Black where i wanted the damage to be, then put a smaller dot of Bastion Grey over the Coal Black...
all the bottom edges of the chips were hit with my final highlight mix of Underbelly Blue and white...

@eldar own: you're right about the fur...
the pelt is pretty poorly sculpted compared to the newer stuff like Kor'sarro's cape, which is a dream to paint...
this was pretty much just an exercise to paint the armour, so the rest feels like an afterthought...

i've been to the demons a few times here in the states, and in the UK as well...
i've made the finals each time, and come away with a bronze demon in l.a. a few years ago...
it's just that i travel so much, and i'm usually chasing waves all summer, so have missed a few contests i should have attended...
i did make the finals at the last l.a. games day, and got to hang out with Gary Oldman...

@empchild: metals are usually a bit experimental on each mini, trying out different washes...
i start with P3 Pig Iron as the basecoat...
a basic wash is a mix of P3 Armor Wash and Flesh Wash (which is quite purple)...
then i clean it up with Pig Iron again, and highlight with Radiant Platinum...
i try to keep it simple, and just place the highlights in the most effective spot...
the same goes for the gold, just be sure to basecoat with a dark brown, and mix some into the first layer of gold so it covers well, and you don't have to use as many layers to get a nice solid colour...

thanks again for your time, everyone...

cheers

thanks guys...

@gretar: the snow on the base is just a couple layers of GW snow flock...
it didn't really seem like it took patience to paint all the chips...
since it was something i really wanted to try, and it miraculously went right the first time (except on the black shoulder pad), the chips just seemed to paint themsleves...
now i will be cursed to never have it go so well again...

@kestral: this is my job, so i can't afford to get to attached to my paintjobs...
usually, by the time it's done, i've stared at a mini and thought about it so much, i'm happy to send it off to a new home...

i actually don't have many painted minis anymore...
just 3 left to sell from my collection, and i will have none...
right now i'm only concerned about becoming an elite painter, and driving up the demand for my work so i don't have to get a real job...
as long as i have pics of my work, i don't really need a bunch of minis in a cabinet gatherin' dust...
better that someone else can appreciate them too...

cheers
jah
