I'm trying to do some white terminator heads for my Aurora Chapter Terminators but I'm having real trouble not making it look like missed undercoat.
So far I've given the white a thin coat of Elf Grey and then tried hightlighting with pure skull white and some low lights with very thin black strokes... but it's not looking great. Normally I'd just apply a wash but any washes I do over that are going to colour it too much.

Doesn't help much this is an old metal terminator from '94 so it the detail isn't as deep as the newer ones.

Any suggestions?

Build up from Shadow Grey. Mix a small amount of Shadow Grey in with some white and paint it that color. Then do white on top of that. This provides some nice shading, while still looking natural and not too grey. You could do another coat between the two of white with a little codex grey, if you wanted.

I start with a coat of Adeptus Battlegrey (or whatever the grey GW foundation paint is called) wash with Badab Black and build up to Space wolves grey with one pure highlight of Skull White. I'm pretty happy with how they turn out.

So:
Adeptus Battle Grey
Badab Black wash
2:1 ABG:Space Wolves Grey
1:1 ABG:SWG
1:2 ABG:SWG
Highlight Skull white

My FLGS suggested basecoat, foundation over that with astronomican grey, then 50/50 astro grey/skull white in all but the deepest recesses then very fine highlight with pure skull white

Have done on 5 Aurora termies at home - dont have photos however im pretty happy with the result.

Red Winter's formula looks pretty good too

Also on one of my images where I only had a single coat of grey another Dakkarite suggested Deneb stone - i've not tied it but worked for him.

a squad of aurora terminators I did...

for the heads, I used denehb stone foundations as a base, then did a heavy black ink wash, then drybrushed it with skull white when dry... I then highlighted any parts the drybrush missed. gave me a very recognizable white head, but some extreme shadowing / highlighting that makes them really stand out.
