I've got to say, i've been using army painter lately, and i think its some of the better stuff i've ever used. So either you just got one bad can (which happens to every brand) Or you might have been spraying too close to the mini.

Always prime test figures or sections of leftover sprue before you go to your army figures.

Same here, ive more than a few cans of primer and colours and all work fine for me (even the ones over 6 months old.)

I cant say this enough to people. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS!!!! test out spray cans before using them. Even if youve used it the day before. a couple quick sprays on a sprue or something will save you from having to strip minis.
And remember if you have to strip ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS use

Sounds like you didn't take the time to learn the new spray. Not all sprays are created equal and some take a bit more work to 'learn' them.
I highly suggest you take another stab at the spray on a different day with some test pieces and figure out the best distance and method for using the spray.
Check out some of these articles for a bit more on spray priming. Specifically this one.
