Back in 1990 to 1994 when I played WHFB and 40k at high school (boarding school) that was how every player's armies looked until they could mail order in the minis they wanted/needed.

No FLGS or GW stores back then.... or internet.

Lucky you. I hardly knew these games existed in high school. Or at least,
I was the only one I knew who was somewhat aware of them.

There was a group of kids who played battletech, but that was never my scene.
