Goalkeeper Ivan Banovic was booked after rescuing a pitch-invading cat during a top-flight match in Croatia.

Medjimurje Cakovec's Banovic picked up the wandering feline after it strayed on to the pitch 20 minutes into his team's match at Sibenik.

He placed it safely near a scoreboard but was then booked by the referee for leaving the pitch without permission.

Media reports said the official's actions annoyed fans, who barracked him for punishing Banovic's kind deed.

If the moggy was a home fan, it would been left purring as Sibenik won 1-0 to go second in the table.

That article was thick, but by what I gathered a pitch is a sports-field and a cute wittle kitten had wandered onto it. A kind hearted player picked it up and moved it to safety under the scoreboard, but was penalized by the referee for leaving the field.

This man is a true hero.

In Short, the Goalkeeper grabbed a cat that had wandered on and put him safely off the pitch, at which point the Referee gave him a Caution/Booking/Yellow Card (no idea what it is in US sports, but if you get Two Yellows you are sent off for the remainder of the match) for leaving the field without permission, which technically is a bookable offence under the Laws of the Game.

Can you blame the refs for following the rules as they were written? Although this seems like more of a case where following the spirit of a game > RAW.

Can you imagine if a REAL football player inadvertently tackled a stray cat? The NFL would not only be hounded by dog lovers but cat lovers too.

This is soccer right? Refs can call a time. This is stupid. Sticks with nails need to be utilized.
If its cricket or something I'd proffer its even easier. If this were baseball it would be no big deal.

The reason why there is no cat punting in any sport, is because it's too difficult to kick one which hasn't been sedated, and to unsporting to kick one which has.

I believe there is a Mongolian sport which involves dragging goats around. Goats are larger than cats, of course, however the players are mounted so there is probably a good level of challenge involved.
