I'm sure that there are already threads of this, but I can't find any because I'm terrible with any type of search engine.

Any ways. Here it is:
For the Assault terminators that are put in Land Raiders. What is the most effective 5 man squad in most situations? whether it be marines, tanks, or orks.

Simple enough right? I thought I had it right with 3 LC and 2 TH/SS. However now I'm hearing that full Thunder Hammers are the best.
Please give your opinion. Thanks alot.

The nastiest Land Raider Cargo I ever had to deal with was 5 TH/SS terminators+Lysander and his thunderhammer made out of pure ownage. They killed my entire nob wound shenanigan squad and both of my battlewagons while I killed...none of them. The reason people like the all TH build is not so much the TH itself...but the Storm Shields. 3++ is awesome against units that bring lots of power weapon attacks, and it doesn't matter if you go last with that kind of defense, and they are Thunder Hammers, they instakill things, they give you a shot against MCs, and whatever you wound with them that doesn't die is going last, not to mention the shake on vehicles. Now, if you have a slightly older Marine Codex (Like Blood Angels, Black Templars, or Dark Angels) More lightning claws are in order (though BTs can get Furious Charging THs IIRC, so it's worth it to mix two or three in, for the others you might want one or two max.)

Thunder Hammers and Storm Shields for more defensive.

3+ Invul is nothing to sneeze at.

However, 5 Lightning Claws gives you 4 Attacks on the Charge with re-rolls to wound. Nothing to sneeze at either.

Th/SS is the most competitive, but I might run LC's.

And if you stick a chaplain in there (or are Black Templars and have Preferred Enemy) you re-roll to hit as well. I hear that in the old Marine codex this was the assault terminator build that everyone ran.

This gives me an idea.

I'll try this combo out, see how it works.

If given proper transport, those termies could dish out a LOT of hurt.

This edition it is all about the TH+SS, last edition it was all about LC's. In 4th you could give them furious assault for 3 points a model which made the LC's amazing.

For a squad over 5 models I say start adding LC's.

Now for combo moves I vote this:

With Vulkan, go all TH's

With Khan on foot, go LC's and one TH, add a chappy to this for a savage combo out of a LR or LRC.

For a 10 man squad I would take an even split as then you can put non PW attacks on the LC's as agains tmost assualt units they will swing simulatneously. The TH termies can take the PW attacks.

It's a good idea to take 3 or 4 SS+TH. 2 LC termies will be able to strike at initiative, killing an early 2 average models (3 on the charge). The other 3 TH termies will only do slightly more than that, and will be slow.

After the lightning claws attack, place any regular wounds suffered on them. Put power weapon wounds on the SS. You can also potentially abuse wound allocation if you have two groups of models in the unit.

Well, the second most nasty thing in a land raider I faced was Berserkers of Khrone, which is basically that (or is the same idea). They hit the enemy with a ton of attacks, and a ton of wounds, make them lose combat, and run them all down. If you don't manage to kill everyone though (or kill not enough), your terminators might all get killed right back.

They are both just as powerful.
Mathammer them against each others and its pretty even.

They are used in and vs totally different opponents though.

BUT...A SM army is mostly shooty with flamers and bolters that can take down weaker opponents. The same opponents have a harder time beating SM in melee.
What the SM army DO have a problem with are carnifexes, deamon princes and big, nasty melee things. Here the TH/SS terminators fill a nice weak gap and since it is far easier to make an SM army that kills hordes (shooting) then MEQ big hitters the hammer terminators will on average have a better synergy in the normal SM army.

The hammers also require less babysitting units then the clawed ones. If you run with claws you need transports more often and to watch out for AP2 shooty enemies, hammers dont need such protection from friendly units tying up enemy AP2 shooters etc etc. If you go against KISS you will loose more often then not.

My friend plays Deathwing and he has a squad of like 6 termies with an apothecary and a chaplain. Something like 30 PW attacks with rerolls to hit AND wound is just insane.

In a LR you are probably better with the LC since survival is not an issue anyway. Footslogging you would want TH/SS for sure though.

Either that or take a 4+ cover save from all of GW's red tape blocking LoS to the way to play it. - Kitzz

Personally I prefer 2 with thunderhammers and 3 with lightning claws.
