Well that is one hell of a way to start a collection.

Get the new Space Marine Codex--This will give you a bunch of good ideas about the different units, and read the lists here.

Man that's a lot of stuff...

Thanks!! I do have the 5th Ed SM codex, along with the 'I can brain you with this book' hardcover 40k rulebook. I've read through it a couple times (am I a dork for reading roleplaying/wargaming books cover to cover the first time I open them?) and I'm kind of getting a feel for the units. Playing is helping as well.

If I'm lucky, I have a Terminator Chaplain and ten more sniper scouts on the way this week. Once I'm done paying off my friend Quinn for what I got from her, I have another friend who is willing to sell me -his- Marines ...

WOW that is a lot of stuff.....let's see what a newbie like me can make of it..

First of all what points are we looking at taking? 1000? 1500? 2000?

Gonna be using Codex:SM so all Dark Angels stuff is out. Just gonna be using normal space marine rules.

OK for HQ we have choice of:

Jump Pack Chaplain. 115 points

Taking this guy with an assault squad is AWESOME. Being able to reroll failed rolls to hit with a 10 man squad gives you a STUPID amount of possible rolls to wound. hehehehe

Captain. 100 points (vanilla)
Captains are good. Captains are ok. captains are run-of-the-mill until you tool them up.
Relic Blade and Storm Shield for close combat at higher strength and survivability (145 points). Or combi-weapon, lightning claw and artificer armour for multi-tasking (140 points).
You can take a command squad if you want, but EVERYONE will tell you it's not worth it. Just take Termintators instead.

Terminator Librarian (130 points)
NOW we're talking. Upgrade this guy to an Epistolary (50 points) and you can take 2 psychic powers each turn, and be safe in the knowledge not much is going to get through this guy's armour.

For elites:

Terminator Squad (200 to 460 points)
Choose between close combat and ranged. With ranged it'll cost more (heavy weapons are extra points). but what heavy weapons! Assault cannons are mmmm. Heavy Flamers are a must if going against hoardes. And Cyclones are good for getting some hurt in early on in the game when they're too far away for other weapons.
Only downside is you have to either Deep Strike, foot slog, or take a Land Raider.
And you're fresh out of land raiders.

Dreadnoughts (x 3)
Dreadnoughts are good. Dreadnoughts take a lot of punishment. Take a techmarine and they get even better.
Take MOTF or Vulkan and they get super ouchy.
Best to decide it's either a close combat or long range dread. Don't try and do both.

Veterans (125 to 300 plus)
Veterans are classed as Sternguard. Sternguard are good cause they get the special ammo.
That means they can take out most things at range, even tanks sometimes without needing heavy weapons.
They are expensive though.

TROOPS:

Tactical Squad (90 to 250 points)
This is where most of your points need to go cause these guys are the mainstay of the army.
Take 10 guys to a squad to take advantage of heavy weapons and assault weapons. Combat squadding with a Razorback is a good idea....

Assault Squad:
Plasma Pistols are a waste. take it as a "counts as bolt pistol". It eats your points while possibly causing no damage to enemies and exploding one of your guys just when you don't need it. Besides, your assault guys should be in CC, not shooting.
Consider lightning claws for sergeant, that'll mean he can reroll his failed rolls to hit, AND it's a power weapon so no armour saves for who he wounds.

Scout Squad. (75 +)
Sniper Rifles are the reason scout squads exist. Forget giving them bolters or heavy weapons you need sniper rifles! Pinning, auto wound on 4+ and a 72" range......job done.

HEAVY SUPPORT

Devastators (150 points plus if you're taking 4 heavy weapons)

Much underrated. Get a squad into heavy cover and you;re guaranteed a good round of shooting and taking out enemy armour. Leave them in the open with blast weapons aiming at them.......not so good.

Predator: 65 points
The good: Can take heavy bolter or lascannon sponsons. For anti-infantry the heavy bolters work well, and for tank hunting lascannons are a must. Don't touch the autocannon though.

The bad: Unless you keep your predator in cover or obscured, and don't allow the enemy to flank it, there's a lot of anti armour stuff that can go through AV 11 and AV 13 armour.

The ugly: It's one model. Unlike a Devastator squad where if you get hit by a lascannon it's one guy dead, it's your whole heavy unit gone.

This applies for whirlwind and vindicators too.

Land Speeder (50 points plus)

Good: Great at harrassment. At range with typhoon or assault cannon

Bad: Armour isn't good enough to save it from concentrated anti armour fire.

Hope you have fun putting together your army from your collection! it's quite a hoarde!
