So basically i've taken an interest in 40k since my friends play it and have been asking that i play it as well. i looked at each of the codex's and decided that being an unable to be insta killed daemonic jerk sounded like alot of fun. So i looked at the codex and i wasnt sure to what to buy first. plus my birthday is coming up and they(friends) are saying they'll buy me something or other. this is the kinda list i might want to play but im not sure and need pointers obviously.

H.Q.

Great unclean one and epidemius or skulltaker (or just epidemius and skulltaker)

Troops

Plaguebearers(10)

Bloodletters (10)

Elites

6 Flamers of Tzeentch(go go suicide flamer ^.^)

Heavy Support

Doesnt really matter to me but i'd want either a daemon prince or 2 or a soulgrinder

if you gonna use epidmius the whole/most of ur army should be nurgle. otherwise drop epidimius and get a rainbow of all deamons. would suggest a small squad of screamers for anti tank and 24" turbo boost to contest objectives. also amybe split ur flamers as just 3 BoC can decimate a squad.
and i'd take DP over soulgrinder as the on average last longer. (too many melta around lately)

If you read this i own your soul.

yeah was going to go with the daemon rainbow since i just had a 2v1 with my friends.
his was CSM and i went daemons and we both did nurgle to piss off our friend who plays orks.
1.8k so CSM and i got 900 each and the ork player had 1.8k

either way didnt end the way i liked it since plaguebearers arent offensive enough even with the tally. mainly cuz we couldnt get enough kills going -_-
(please note im new to 40k so if i say something stupid well...sorry?)

O H I am in the Webway...

First off, what's the points value?

Pointers:

Herald of Tzeentch on Chariots w/ BoT & We Are Legion and Master of Sorc. + Soul Devourer are GREAT HQ's.

Plaugebearers --> Tarpit unit (bogg things down)

Bloodletters --> Smash

Daemonetts and Horrers are meh imho

Fiends and Bloodcrushers are amazing. Especcially the fiends.

HS wise I suggest DP w/ MOT + Flight + BoT for more AT

Hounds are alright for speed assaulting

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster and if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you

i honestly didnt give Tzeentch or any of the ranged much thought. I heard they weren't very good so i sort of skipped on them.

Also look at a herald of Slaanesh on a chariot! 65pts for a unit with 5 wounds, 7 attacks on the charge with rending, fleet, 12 inch charge, 4+ armour sv, and furious charge.
You could buy 2 for the price of above tzeench herald.
not saying dont get the tzeench herald just get sum slaanesh too.

i would avoid daemonettes and horrors too.

fast attack i would suggest seekers over hounds. rending more attacks and aura of acquiescence.

If you read this i own your soul.

I as well have had an interest in the mixed bag daemon armies. The things I have been able to gather, from dex reading and watching a buddy play is as follows: plagues are great to put icons in as they have great survivability. Daemonettes are pretty sweet, but only when fielded in large squads (15+) as they rely on sheer number of dice rolled. Bloodletters are about on par with daemonettes... You trade number of attacks for the power I feel that comes to personal preference-power or number. Horrors are a very powerful unit, not only do they AP well for a basic troop, but they cause enough shots to hurt a horde and cause enough saves on MEQ to be a real threat. Bloodcrushers or fiends are great, but you need to only have as many models in the squad as there are unique upgrades + 1 regular for wound allocation shennenigans. For fast attack seekers are amazing, their speed makes them a real threat as you can DS them in a much safer area and move them out for combat the next turn. Heavy support is a toss up. Soul grinders can be amazing anti tank AND anti troop, but they give everyones anti tank guns a target. DPs are as always a solid choice and very customizable to your needs. Other units I don't know as much about, but I hope this was at least a little helpful. Remember, daemons look uber with their army wide inv saves, but that doesn't make them THAT much tougher. You still need to be careful and plan. Anyway if a hardcore daemons player comes in and refutes what I've said feel free to ignore me. This is just my impression from observing daemons.

aztralwolf is correct haha) excepet that blood crushers shouldnt be taken at only half power. for smaller games i would use flamers instead of blood crushers. keep at minimum squad number.

Wouldn't the would allocation trick make a squad of 4 a valid enough threat? I guess maybe its a YMMV situation. My buddy that used to play daemons caused me alotta fits with the squads I described lol. I'm personally curious about daemon princes and how the best builds work on them. They seem to be one of those units its WAY to easy to waste points on as they are the only unit in the book with oodles of options.

for the DP it depends on how you want to run him. the 2 best options are nurgle or tzeentch.

for a melee DP

you could go MoN noxious touch iron hide and optional wings and BoC

for a fire base. Master of sorcery BoT demonic gaze and BoC iron hide.

it just depends on what you are plannin on using them for.

Very interesting. My interest in daemons is primarily based on conversion/painting as I find them to be a vibrant sight on the table. But its nice to see how effective they can be in addition to their aesthetics.

the only problem with trying to convert/ re pose the real daemon figs is that they are metal

I believe I heard something about a plastic DP kit sometime in the near future? I'd be happy to see that as the nurgle DP is awesome, I'd love to see a plastic kit to make a DP of each dark power.

Well even that way is fine, just give a kit to make a khorne/tzeench/slaanesh DP and leave the awesome metal nurgle one.

Use flamers in groups of 3 more than 3 can end up with you losing firing (since template can't touch your own models) team them up with the masque for 1st turn alpha strike. 2 x3Flamers and the masque first turn drop in, aggressive deepstriking is the key you will occasionally lose units before they hit the table but when it works it's priceless. The Flamers drop close to infantry units the masque drops somewhere she can hit both the units you have targetted for flamer destruction, use the maques pavane of slaanesh to bunch up the targets and let fly with the flames of death (my record on this is 21 Space Wolves in one turn). You will most probably get charged the next turn but this is not a bad thing as flamers have a 4++ save and the masque a 3++ plus hit and run if you can keep them in combat for 2 turns whatever you deepstrike next is gonna have less shooting coming it's way before it gets the charge.

Daemons are a real 'glasshammer' army they can hit harder than anything but can't take a hit in return, at the end of the day a 5++ save might sound great but its only a 1/3 chance of saving a model.

Some builds are glass hammers but there are also builds that are hard as nails.

What builds would these be? Fateweaver MC build? All Nurgle build? Just curious to learn.

Very true I'd forgot the fateweaver bloodcrusher/MC combo.

Nurgle is always strong. I think most people that talk about daemons have very little practical experience.

most people who talk about daemons aren't daemon players. haha) not all nurgle are strong. they have the worst elite choice in the army. GUO is a very resilient HQ choice but slow as hell

My main experience with daemons comes from fighting them, never actually used them.

The popular Tallyman list is very strong, especially with a mix of Grinders and a daemon prince. Even the nurglings aren't bad since they are eternal warriors.
