I was playing lizardmen erlier and got my lord into combat with a slann in the middle of a unit of bigger looking lizardmen (I forget what they are called)... It was in some kind of special rules formation that has 6 in front, slann in middle behind them, 2 more on each side of slann and 6 in back I believe...

How does this work for the slann moving forward after I kill stuff? Do I actually have to kill the entire unit (or at least... 14) just to be able to get into combat with this guy? Or does he move up as soon as I kill enough to make room for him (which doesnt make sense game wise, since you take from the back usually..)

I was a bit confused on this so can anyone answer my question? Sorry if its a really basic thing as I am still learning and Ive never seen a character not in the front of a unit before

Hi puggy! i'll attempt to answer this question! ( though i could be wrong grrr )

Aslong as the slann have saurus ( or temple guards ) behind him , they'll be able to move forward
infront of him to form a proper rank. So basically aslong as there are 5 saurus or temple guards alive ,
the slann can hide behind them and still cast magic.

Ah ok.... jeeze that sucks for me... Hes hard enough to kill as it is, and since both my armies are close combat... well theres not much point in attempting to flatten the unit... Thanks for the answer! Next time Im just going to stay clear of the unit and try to wipe out everything else <.<

uhhhhh first time it was WoC.... Second time it was orcs (I really hate playing my orcs... Im not good at them to begin with and on top of that most people tend to think their awful anyways)

Its hard enough to get into combat with anything since I always gets march blocked and a magic list using lore of metal against my 3 dispel dice army.... its really nasty.

haha... If I could just get into a challenge with it, either grimgor or my chaos lord would make quick work of him Im sure... thats just the problem though... cant get into combat with him

Yea, Luna's right I think, you have to kill the temple guard down to 4 models to pop the frog into the front rank. BUT I'm also pretty sure that if the frog is in saurus (i.e. not temple guard) than he has to ride the front like any character. Most likely you're facing TG, but the rule for riding the second rank doesn't count for normal saurus.

Boss_Savlage is right .

But dont be surprised to see Meat shield Slann in Saurus units ( those are nightmare as well >< ) They have discipline and items that allow them to have like...
minus 1 to hit , 2+ ward save or 4+ ward save , regen , etc etc D:

As much as I like the idea of tying up big units, risking my 400+ general with the best leadership in the game to an enemy unit doesn't sound that great to me. Temple guard really seem like a no brainer to me - Stubborn LD 8 with a reroll on 3 dice, immune to psychology, great AS - take 16 of them in a unit and a tooled up Slann and you have 3 things:
1. Great way to spread LD 9 around the general's unit
2. Great points denial unit to the enemy
3. A unit which won't break from combat (has something like a 97 or 98% pass rate)

The ward save for the slann is against shooting! So you don't want to count on that to help make it a tar-pit unit.

Ideally he's in a unit of temple guard, and they survive long enough to keep the Slann OUT of combat... he's an awfully expensive guy to lose!

Actually the Slanns ward save is a nirmal ward save that works against everything. You are thinking of "the Devine Plaque of Protection" which says that the Slann's Ward save is improved from 4+ to 2+ for all ranged attacks.

He have tons if discipline that will make him very hard to kill.
especially Transcendant Healing + Higher state of consciousness
