Ok after my first trade experience that went bad on here(thankfully got my stuff back though!!!) I was thinking of a idea. I use a video game trading site called Goozex and my girlfriend uses a book swapping site called paperback swap. The interesting thing about both of these sites is they match you up with trades based of condition of items, ect. Is there one like this for minis or if not would you use a site like that? Match you up based off of feedback on the site, condition of your minis, ect?

Isn't the paperback swap more about swapping books like a library?

It is to a certain extent. I am just look at the overall basic idea of the site though. Heck some of us have enough minis to be considered a library

Well, there were a couple of well-reputed mini-trading sites mentioned in the Swap Shop Rules and Guidelines Thread....

You got it RM. What I am thinking about is a site that has some trade algorithms built within it where it compares stats like mini condition, user ratings, location ect then matches you up

I think the problem with that (assuming I'm understanding the system you're trying to describe) is that unlike book/video-game swapping, people interested in trading mini's tend to have specific trades in mind that I somehow suspect an algorithm wouldn't be able to fully satisfy. Furthermore who judges "mini condition"?

While I've been on Dakka a long time, I will never, ever trade on here after my bad experience. Sorry between the "well we cant really do much if it goes bad" and now add the fact they actually have said trader on the "good trader" list and havent answered my question on why or what about that in the thread of traders....well its not worth it.

Your better off on bartertown or some place, rather than trying to make it or something like it a book or game exhange.

Sorry about not responding carmachu - we were waiting to discuss things internally to decide on how we felt about the topic you raised. With the recent holidays, it got a bit neglected. I apologize for that.

If you don't mind, I'll take it to the Swap Shop Discussions/Suggestions thread in Nuts & Bolts since that's the more appropriate section in which to address/answer your query.

Jin while I do agree with you on the conditions part I think for the most part, key word there is most. Folks will be honest about the condition of the minis and I think if you could make the algorithm smart enough it could help curb most of the condition issues. The other part you are dead right on wanting something specific and that is where I see my idea has a major flaw.

Dont take this the wrong way, while I dont expect you to make changes anytime soon......it would have been nice to get a response before now, there, not here.

But thanks.

t3bor,

how about an inventory system.

A person - is able to list X item into their 'inventory'.

Associate a picture to that item as well as a description.

Then 'save' it into their inventory.

Then there will be a huge database of items.

People would be able then use a search function to potentially find these items- in these people's inventory slots.

Then they look around, and contact them.

When they reach contact point - there will be a form in which both parties will click the exact items from their inventory to be sold, and attached along is their personal information. An overall copy of the said trade agreement is in place. Then once both parties 'agree'. A copy is saved into the database, and both people will have a true - contractual agreement that can be printed out.

This is an idea I have had for over a year- I am going to start developing it for RM, as I progress through my education in Information Technology and Systems.
but something I won't pursue atm, I'm working on a very large, new system for something else which is to be released soon.

Is this something along the lines you speak of?

There isn't an exact way - to duplicate the said system above. Books and games are different than models.

Oh yeah RM now you are cooking!! Another idea I was thinking of too was if the user has feedback on another site say ebay for example that would all roll in as well to a profile for quick view. Another idea I think would be handy is a googleish map system that IF and the big word is IF the user was ok with it getting their location info and matching up folks that may be close as to be able to do face to face trades.

In theory - all your ideas and such is good.

Usability - ease of use.
Convenience

and such would all fit into the ideas you are talking about.

Though that is in theory.

The cost of added features as you mentioned - would be very nice for most users.

But also very nice to abusers.

So the cost of easeness, and cool features would be the inability to be be 100% secure. Which is a toss up that must be considered. There isn't a way to directly validate one's ebay account to one's forum or user account.. ebay doesnt have any open-id's for that. I wish.

Its still just written on paper. I dont plan on doing such work until a long while - takes a lot of man hours, testing, and such ;P.

Localized face to face trading is another cool thing - just gotta think things through.

I am hoping that open id becomes a standard very very soonish but yes RM you made very good points too. Only time will tell what magic you can work
