So yeah, is GW going to release anything of note this December? The only thing they got up for pre-order at the time of typing this is their assortment of Legion of the Damned slated for the second of January.

Nothing. Some collectors bitz, which I don't count, as I only special order them.

Yeah, I heard they wanted to go with the version that had been playtested for a change and realised their mistake.

This year, as for the past few years, major December releases are large gift-oriented items like large scenery bundle deals (e.g., Imperial Sector), special Army Cases and carrying bags, the new and rather large Fortress of Redemption, bundle deals on existing model ranges and the Mega-paint set. Also, as it has been for the past few years, there will be no major model releases in December.

Didn't last December have Ork releases such as the Battlewagon and Stormboyz?

Considering the biggest shopping day in December is actually in late November, there probably will not be any major releases until after the new year.

Being a large somewhat expensive box it fits in well with the idea that December is the time of year that GW has an easier time selling large, higher price point items than the rest of the year, so from that stand-point it's not a huge surprise. I've seen more non-hobbyist parents in the past week in my local GW store buying large boxes of models than I normally see in months, so GW would appear to have a sound marketing idea for December.

Correction: last year it was a mega paint set, two LotR blisters, dice cubes and those bags.

Yep, but they're not really a "listed" release it seems.

Could very well they don't exist at all. Wouldn't be the first rumor to vanish in a puff of owl-downy nonsense.

Well, they've been confirmed by all the reliable sources(Harry and Brimstone, off the top of my head) and hinted at repeatedly.

I think the issue is that they're just rereleasing archived models, and don't want to give it really too much hype considering that.
