Hey,

Does anyone have any ideas on how the Planetstrike Skyshield works during the initial firestorm?

What is hit if a plate lands on top of it? The Skyshield or the models on it? And what if there are models beneath it?

This Skyshield business is messing with me, there are so many situations I feel aren't covered by the rules.
Does the attacker simply decide whether he fires on the structure or on the models on the structure?

Or, for that matter, how does normal ordnance work for it? If I put a large blast on top of a bunch of marines standing on the (raised) shield, do I:
1. Hit the marines, allowing them a 4++ save?
2. Hit the shield and roll for vehicle damage.
3. Other

And what would happen to a wrecked shield if there are models on top as well as below it? From different armies?

Any input is welcome.

Thanks.

... Everything you are looking for is on page77 to 85 of the BGB.

IIRC, the Skyshield is not a building, so it cannot be harmed.

No, everything isn't in the rules. It doesn't cover models below other models when a structure is destroyed?

If I remember correctly, it says buildings are to be treated as stationary vehicles.

The Skyshield is a building with AV 13 on all sides.

And I don't think the BRB says anything about firestorming a raised skyshield. I can't remember the BRB saying anything about effects on the structure when plating models on the structure.

Hmm, I'm starting it mistrust myself here...

I'm gonna go and double check on the AV situation and then maybe the entire discussion falls flat...

AV13 so may take damage... it is also multi level so you must pick which level is attacked (How ever barrage always hits the top).

If you shoot at the top level then only that level will be hit. So if you aim for the top you will hit the building and the marines on top(who will get their 4+) but the marines under it will not be hit.

If the building is destroyed (wrecked ect) i would use the building as is as the wreck. It solves problems with model not having any where to stand.

If the building explodes all models within 6" take a str3 hit.

In addition i would play it as being difficult and dangerous terrain after it has been destroyed.

Also the main rule for dealing with all these problems is found at the start of page 77 Deffining buildings and ruins "There is no right or wrong way in choosing how your buildings and ruins work - they can even behave differently in different games!"

The multi-level rule is for ruins, not buildings.

But honestly, I'm not sure how they expected the Skyshield to function. If it's treated as a Building, which seems to be the case, then embarked models could not be targeted. You would shoot at the building itself, and if models are on top it would count as open-topped.

However, treating it as a building would never give any benefit of the 'Shielded' mode, since you can never actually target the models embarked in it.

Treating it as a ruin would allow the models to benefit from the shielded mode, since models in ruins can be targeted... but you can't attack ruins, so the Skyshield having an AV would be pointless.

Personally, I would be treating it as neither building nor ruin. It's a terrain piece with an armour value (so can be targeted) that models can move onto via the ladders in the struts. They're not embarked as with a building, just standing on it.

If they're underneath it, they would be protected from Barrage weapons unless it is destroyed.

There is no right or wrong way in choosing how your buildings and ruins work - they can even behave differently in different games!
is GW view on it may be i should have said "this is how i would deal with it using the rule set out by GW"

I think you're taking that somewhat out of context, actually. They're referring to how you classify the terrain, not to being able to pick and choose rules from the Ruins section and apply them to Buildings.

Of course, within the confines of TMIR, you're still free to do whatever you and your opponent agree to do with them anyway, so the point is somewhat moot.

A new day, a new time zone.

Treating the skyshield as a piece of terrain with special rules has always seemed like the most straightforward way to go about things.

Doesn't it say somewhere that "normal" building/ruin has an AV of 10?

However, does this mean that if I land a firestorm blast on a squad on top of a skyshield and it hits then I do the usual hit allocation to the squad on top and then I resolve an S9 hit to the sky shield with 2D6, pick highest?

And if it's not a template you choose whether you fire at the models on the structure or the structure itself?

That would (sort of) make sense, but I'm not sure if there's any RAW that supports this.

That's how i would play it, all hit at the same time with a Str9 blast and 2D6 on the building
