I have a growing Ork army and when Ive taken Nobs before Ive done the normal approach to give the squad 2-3 PK, a few 'uge choppas, a bosspole, a dok and a Waaagh! banner or some close variation. Basically the focus was on close-combat. I thinking though that I want a more Mek/shooty themed army and was wondering about the usefulness of a more ranged focused Nob group. Give them a few combi weapons and TL shootas with a dok, but I haven't done this before so I was hopping for some input.
Again I'm not talking about a super-competitive list here, I don't need them to be the best use of points/units but I want to make sure they at least work.

Hmmmm. I dont know man. Ive never tried this but I cant immagine it being even remotely decent. I mean the main reason for Nobs are the power weapons and extra crumpin. At the end of the day, if Nobs arnt crumpin, their just another ork with BS 2.

Well, I suppose you'd have to compare them to Flash Gits.
Flash Gits have a gun that's just as good as a twin linked shoota, and get it for free if you purchase Eavy Armor for them. You can further upgrade this gun with More Dakka.
On other hand, Nobs get a Bosspole, Kombi-Weapons, and can take a Powerklaw in their squad.
If you're not sure about really going "ranged", you could take a more close combat squad with a lot of Komi-Skorchas. Those things do a lot of damage.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it. |

Uh... shooty nobz have their own entry... theyre called flash gitz, just sayin. Although an entire unit of TL shootas or 10 kombi rokkits popping at the same target in one turn would be intimidating.

Hmmm... True, Flash Gitz are more ranged oriented (yet they still don't have a higher BS) You don't get the flexibility of combi weapons but then again once your done firing you rokkits and skorchas youre left with a STR 4 gun compared to the Gitz who can get STR 6 guns.
From what some people have told me when I was first assembling my ork army they said flash gitz are terrible but then again he pretty much hated every heavy support other than kans.
So have any of you used Flash Gitz and are they decent. I am also interest in the uses for their Gitfinda.

Flash gitz are overpriced. They are not good at what they do (shooting) and they can't do anything else. Shooty nobz would be even worse.
Shooty orks on the other hand is very viable. KFF mek, lootas, shoota boyz, and kanz makes a tough nut to crack and it has bite in CC and shooting.

Shooty nobz have no place in this world, except in cities of death. Try a 'nob seer council' This is when you take all kombi-skorchas, and drive up to the enemy, disembark, and lay down template after template. Not great, but amusing and fun.

I've got to agree with the majority here.
Nobs are geared to close combat and keeping PK's alive long enough to do some serious damage.
On Nobs you pay extra for an extra wound, a higher initiative, a higher toughness, and an extra CC attack.
3 out of 4 of those things are wasted as a shooter.
max boyz 180pts, 30 shooters, 30 wounds.
Max shooty nobs 250pts, 10 shooters, 20 wounds.
The one good thing I can see is they can get off 10 rokkits in one turn, but that is a one shot trick.

9 kombi-skorchas. That is 9 heavy flamers that will not miss due to low BS. Or maybe mix in a few kombi-rokkits and some amo runts. It's like a sternguard squad! And you can still have 2 fists in there, so they can still krump heads in after they are done burning things. If your going to do a mek themed army though, a better elite might be Burnaboyz. around 10 points cheaper than shooting nobz, sure they need a ride, but they are a huge group of boyz with power weapons, or they can decide to torch some guardsmen with their flamethrowers (again, won't miss).
