boltgun is slightly darker... use boltgun for a base, then wash it with blue ink, then hit it with a highlight of chainmail, then an extreme highlight of mithril silver in places.

If you want to do really good looking metal don't paint it just one color. My favorite technique if I want ti to look good is to base it boltmetal, wash it with badab black, re-highlight up with boltmetal, leaving the corners and edges alone, then to highlight with mithral. Try it on a model. Compared to other advanced techniques it is very quick and easy, but it looks absolutely amazing. Once you do a full metal highlight you will never go back to painting with one color.

For large areas of metal I always start off with a black prime coat then tinbitz base coat - no matter what metal i'm doing.
Then sucessive drybrushes of boltgun, chainmail & mithril silver.
Use a wash mix of blue & black (for clean armour) or dev mud & black (for greasy armour).
You may need more than 1 wash.
Re-highlight with chainmail & then mithril silver.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

I think the idea is pretty set in stone.

Nither Chainmail or Boltgun is a better color, but they are certanly great a complementing each other! Use them together and highlight, its the only way to fly!
