Hi Dakka Dakka Forum

I was wondering in the Space Marine Codex it has a paragraph stating that you can use named characters/Unique Character stats to a Custom Model. I was wondering does this also apply to the Space Wolves Codex too?

Ex I'm trying to create a Custom Character

Vel'Cona Chief Librarian of The Salamanders, and the Ultramarines Psyker is absolute junk, so I was looking at the Njal Stormcaller, and I was wondering If I could uses his states and changing up the Psychic powers to be more Salamander like since my Army is a combination of Salamanders and Imperial Fists. Would giving Njal's Stats be within the stated Codex rules

Pg 127 "You'll Notice that the named characters in the Space Marines Army list are drawn from several different Chapters, but they can still be used in the same army if you wish. This can represent the common occurrence of different Space Marine chapters fighting alongside one another. Alternatively, you can use the model and rules for a named character to represent a mighty hero of a different Chapter.." (Taken from the 5th Ed Space Marine Codex)

I hope you guys can be helpful and answer this question for me.

PS A big WAAAAAAAAAGH goes out to the DakkaDakka forums and if your not adding more Dakka YOU IS MUKIN' ABOUT!

The Space Marine army list covers models available for Space Marine armies.

So: No, you get to use rules from only one codex at a time (note that DH/WH codexes have rules saying otherwise, which is an exception not a discrepancy).

Short answer: No, you can not use a space wolves character in a space marine army, or the other way around, as they are separate codexes.

Long answer: If your opponent agrees, you can make up a character any way you want.

If you exclusively or regularly play against eachother, then perhaps you could work out a trade where you're allowed to make up a character the way you want it, say taking a space wolves psyker into your marine army after changing his powers. And your opponent is then allowed to mix&match up a character of his own.

Mine would be that in addition to giving Fleet to the entire army, my Shrike version would make all vanguards scoring units.

I can understand people saying no, I just trying to understand the fine line between chapters because Black Templar and Space Wolves follow the Codex Astartes but they're so branched out that Games Workshop decided to give them their own Codex? And I just bring up this question cause the couple paragraphs say that you can take named character stats and use them in a customer character.. Guess they should make a Salamander Codex >.> I wanna be able use Drakes as Units >.> like greater Daemens XD with Flamestorm cannon like flame breath XD it'd be sooooo awesome XD.

I guess the guys I play with we can create a house Rule for it because Tigrus (Ultramarine's Psyker) is really fail.

If the units are all in the same codex, you can mix and match them however you want, name them however you want, and paint or model them more or less however you want *as long as their rules are unchanged*.

For example: It is A-OK to take a Dreadnought, remove its arms, model a big cannon onto it, and stick it on a scenic base the size of a rhino to use as a Vindicator.

It would still be a tank and would have to roll for immobilization upon entering/exiting terrain with AV 13/11/10. This is a legitimate use of the Counts-As Rules.

You could not, however, have it be a Leman Russ because that's in a separate codex with no rules for inclusion into a SM army.

The same thing goes for Njal; he is in the Space Wolves codex, not the Space Marine codex. You could throw a Vulkan model into a SW army and call him Njal, or you can throw a Njal model into a SM army and call him Tigurius, but you cannot use Njal rules in an SM army because that sort of crossover does not exist; only the special characters in the SM dex can be used in an SM army.

In short, each Space Marine codex is a self-contained army, and may only take units within that codex with the sole exception of Inquisitorial Allies rules.
