Subject: Question about declaring charges

Something came up in a Warbands game that I had not encountered previously.
You declare charges in order. We had always just declared charges and then taken fear tests across the board.
In this instance Unit A only wanted to charge my unit if Unit B could charge as well, otherwise the odds would have been in my favor.
Based on what we read in the rules, you take a fear test to see if you can "declare" a charge.
So it went down like this.
Unit B fails its fear test and cannot declare a charge. Next unit to declare a charge would be Unit A, but it does not now because we already know A would be going it alone.
Did we play this correctly?

I want to say yes, but I also want to say that Psychology Checks would have come after declaring the charges (I can't be sure, however).
That's what it boils down to: If psychology comes as-demanded when charging, you did everything right. If psychology comes after all charges are declared, then it would be right only through the technicality that you finished declaring charges by the time unit B failed its charge.

Judging by the wording on the section on declaring charges against a fear-causing unit, I think the Fear Check occurs before you declare charges.

I would agree with Jin on the way the rule is worded.
However it does sound silly that you would test for fear before declaring the charge. If that were true you could test for the fear, then decide not to charge
yet the only thing that would force you to test for fear is actually declaring the charge. According to the rules though...
Personally, I think the OP played it according to the RAW.

Cool. I've never thought of it that way until this game came up. It really lets you know who can make the charge or not before everyone else declares.

Yeah, it's a big help.
IIRC this is a subtle rules change from 6th, in which the failed check prevented the charge, but not its declaration, and so units could often wind up screwed by charging in when a needed co-charger failed the test. I think a fairly large number of players still play it the old way.
