Decided its time to start another army, this time being an ogre kingdoms one.
Rather than going with basic models i want to theme it around samurai's.
So oriental armour for the ironguts, Basic armour for the bulls, katana's will need to feature heavily in the army, yet im at a dead end now.

Need some ideas on making katana's (huge 2 handed for the ironguts and smaller single handed for the bulls)
Also need some ideas on making slightly more oriental ones for maneaters (using them as cathayan longswords)

Wanted to go with origional design on the Kabuto (helmet) with the crests, which i can adapt from the basic irongut helmet, however, i think it will have to be a GS and plasticard job for this.

Rather than going all out and crowding the models, i only plan no having ironguts with: Kabuto, Sode, Do, Kusazuri, Haidate and Tabi.
I want to miss out some of the under armour and extras other wise the models will simply look too bulky and off balance.

The bulls will need slightly less armour, so im thinking only a few pieces (possibly miss out on the Kusazuri and Kabuto for them.

The bruisers and lords will need a much more ornate and OTT set of srmour, which is where im stuck for ideas
Need to find something to distinguish them from the rest (generally more fancy armour, larger Kabuto crests etc etc.)

Generally i need ideas on making each of these parts, and also, i plan on taking Rhinox cav. in the army, so need ideas on an oriental themed barding for that too.

The katana's im thinking will be a plasticard job, but i need a way of making them pretty much the same.
Thats not too much of a problem, however, when im adding the edges to the sword i need a way of keeping it a clean edge, rather than a jagged edge (i cant keep smooth edges to save my life with plasticard)

Want this to be a long-ish project that i can work away at, aiming for around 5,000 points in the end.
But i need to keep it themed.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

Somewhere in south-central England.

You might want to simplify the armour for the low level units. See the picture of ashigaru down below.

I suggest plasticard for the armour as well. As you can see from the diagram most of the pieces are made of medium size plates laced together with an overlap.

The older armours such as O-yoroi used much smaller plates, laced into bigger plates then overlapped, as seen in the Haidate pieces.

Ignore this style of construction and make everything with larger plates. It's easy to heat and bend thin plasticard with boiling water. Assemble the pieces then add lacing with modelling putty.

Make moulds and cast lots of pieces in resin.

The helmet could be done in green stuff and card, then moulded.

Details could be added using etched brass for the helmet decorations. You can etch your own brass or buy ready made stuff like leaves.

Another way to set off different units or leaders is with a sashimono, which is a kind of vertical banner attached on the back of the armour.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

My search powers are weak, but I remember seeing the above person's Project Log for this same idea.

He used stamps to make everything go more quickly and to remain uniform.

If you can track it down it may be of some use.

You also need to decide on your fluff - are the ogres wearing custom-made armour, in which case I suppose one would expect an up-scaled version of normal armour, or are they wearing improvised armour made of looted human-sized armour from their defeated opponents? The same goes for weapons, e.g. they could wear normal swords as daggers.

Given ogres' large size, arguably they'd wear extra armout on their legs and feet, as most opponents can't reach higher than that

KK: Thanks mate, its more than likely ill be going with large plates then, adding details with GS.

However, i fall flat on my arse when it comes to moulds.
Its something ive never done before mate, so everything will have to be scratch built lol.

Also mate, the sashimono idea is great!
Seen it a few times (eldar armies) but never thought about it for this.
Im guessing 1 for unit champs and 2 for characters.

Thanks alot mate, this info helps tons!

Vinsal: Just getting a dead link there mate, by all accounts im not allowed to view that page 0_o

Clang: The armour will all be made by the ogres.
So it will be large scale, rather than stolen and added armour from normal men.
The weapons imlooking at are the basic style katana, Wakisashi and a bronze mace as main weapons, so they will all be ogre made again, simply to justify thier size and looks.

The ogre models have short ish legs, meaning the overhand from thier Kusazuri and Haidate will take up most of the details on the legs.
Thier boots will also stay, meaning only a small part of thier legs will be visible.

Bubba: Thanks mate
The 1st 2 pics look great!
And once again, im not allowed to look at the 3rd link lol, i think my comp is playing up again.

Thanks for all the info so far people
