“World at War: Gear Krieg Banzai!” is 99% written and already in the good hands of our creative consultant/ editor/ proofreader Reuben.
It will include a lot of weird Pacific War background, at least 10 Shiki variants, an army list to field combat walker only forces and 3 Infantry army lists:
Oni,
Koumajutsu and
Betsudotai Ninja special Ops.
Add the lists of my Mongoose published Pacific War book and you are well covered for the weird Pacific War!
DP9 also finished sculpting the new Japanese Shiki 38 and Shiki 41 Walkers for Gear Krieg. Which will be the first new miniature releases for Gear Krieg in many years. The Shiki was a solid early war walker design. They were fast and equipped with a powerful (if limited) punch in the form of the teppoyari anti-tank lance, and they carried two machineguns to deal with enemy infantry.
I received the resin master this week and want to share some pics of the possible variants:
Shiki 38 - basic variant with one turret mounted MG and one rear turret mounted MG, one Teppoyari and Anti-Tank Explosives
Shiki 38 Flamer - variant with one turret mounted Heavy Flamethrower and MG, one Teppoyari and Anti-Tank Explosives
Shiki 38 1.8cm gun - variant with one turret mounted 1.8 cannon, one turret mounted MG, one Teppoyari and Anti-Tank Explosives
Shiki 38 Artillery Rocket - variant with one turret mounted MG, one top turret mounted Artillery Rocket (Heavy), one Teppoyari and Anti-Tank Explosives
Shiki 38 Sonic - variant with turret mounted Sonic Projector, one Teppoyari and Anti-Tank Explosives
Shiki 41: The Shiki 41 was basically an upgraded Shiki 38 combat walker. The Japanese were quick to adapt the Shiki walker designs to the jungle environment. Some of the advances included rubber seals to prevent flooding, snorkels to ford small rivers and wide feet to spread out the walker's weight. All together resulted in the 1941 Shiki 41 amphibious walker. The Shiki 41 also received improved frontal armour and a slightly better engine.
Shiki 41 - basic variant with one turret mounted MG and one rear turret mounted MG, one Teppoyari and Anti-Tank Explosives
Shiki 41 Flamer - variant with one turret mounted Heavy Flamethrower and MG, one Teppoyari and Anti-Tank Explosives
Shiki 41 Laser - variant with one turret mounted Light Laser, one Teppoyari and Anti-Tank Explosives
Shiki 41 AA - variant with turret mounted 2cm Quad AA gun and Anti-Tank Explosives

Strange. I wonder if they're junk in the game, like most other Japanese WWII technology.

A lot of the Gear Krieg walker designs are built so they can fold the legs and have road wheels or treads on them for rapid transport. The setting also has some upgrades for tanks to add superscience weapons to them and such.

so the only difference between the two "models" physically is the weapon loadouts and the shape of the toes? dp9 is usually more creative than that with variants.

The Shiki is a light walker that follows the same design principals as contemporary tanks, speed and agility over protection! Automatically Appended Next Post: Ketara wrote:Is it just me, or does that look like a transformer? Apologies if that's the intent, I'm not familiar with this company.

The legs are also different, the Shiki 41 has additional protection around the secondary movement system (leg) and an additional armour plate bolted on.
According to the background most other changes are internally!

In WWII, much of the weapons used by the Japanese were produced via cottage industry, therefore the quality was sorely lacking. Unless the game seriously deviates from history, and they just might, these Japanese walkers should be, game-rules-wise of inferior quality that is occasionally compensated for by the suicidal zeal of their pilots.

Ahh, got it. Well Gear Krieg picks up where the real world was..
So these walkers are indeed inferior when compared to the walkers of the other nations in GK.
The Shiki was a very early war development based on light British walkers, it was used throughout the conflict and was constantly updated but never was as good armored as a US Longstreet walker.
Some of the more advanced weapons enabled it however to engage every allied walker they encountered.

Yeah, that wicked fringe science is the great equalizer. That's why I don't often bother trying to explain to non-gamers how some of the weird weapons in 40K and such work, because in reality, they would not work, or would do something totally different.

Thier tanks were undersized but considering they were facing a divided and unindustrial China they did a decent job.
At sea and in the air their weapons were cutting edge until someone went and sank all their transports and bombed all their factories.
But considering we're looking at a game where WWII tanks turn into robots with laser guns I don't think 'seriously deviates from history' is already a done deal.
It's not something I'm looking to get into but these are some nice minis.

But "transform into robot" is all japanese kid's dream! This is good point they find.

The design was established years ago with the art in the GK books by DP9. IMO it is indeed an awkward design - as most Japanese armoured car/ tank designs of that time! ;-)
IMO It looks as it schould look!
IMO the DP9 the model is doing a splendid job to look Japanese - Look at the small star at the nose, the MG that really looks like a Type 92 MG. Compare it to Japanese Halftracks etc. etc.
