Subject: Non-imperial imperial guard- modelling advice

Hello all.
I've wanted to collect IG for a while, but have been thinking of rogue (not chaos / renegade) fluff. Something like an IG Battalion that refused to surrender itself up for slaughter (as all good guardsmen should!) for the better good, and broke orders to fight another day without the Emperor's support. Should make it OK story-wise to play against IG or other imperial forces in the future, too.
Question is - I like the IG models, but was wondering whether it would be difficult to remove the imperial crests from the helmets/lasguns/flak armour. Lasguns doesn't seem to problematic (though I've never owned these models - advice appreciated!), but the chest plates certainly do. For heads, I could replace with pig-iron, or was considering some WFB Empire heads with the IG bodies for a 'rogue' feel.
Any suggestions advice much appreciated.
Cheers,
Catiline

Lasgun symbols can easily be shaved off.
I'd go with Catachan models instead of Cadians, though. Their fluff fits better with your idea and they have no imperial markings on them aside from their belt buckle.

Thanks, MSP. I want to use the Catachan for penal legion units (still finishing the fluff - but they will be the deserters/criminal element that have been released after the battalion went rogue), but I really prefer the IG models for the bulk of the force.
I'm an infantry fan myself, but a few Russ and a good number of support sentinels will be there. I don't see that being too difficult - there doesn't seem to much Imperial iconography modelled onto the vehicles.
I'm mostly worried about my footsloggers, and particularly their leaders. As I say -advice very welcome!
Cheers,
Catiline

No problem with shaving off the imperial iconography -
you can't see the chest marking but it was easy to remove.
Just take it off before putting the models together

A careful hand with an x-acto can remove the eagles (from helmet or armour). Use a fresh blade and it's remarkable how easily they come off (but it will just as easily remove skin so BE CAREFUL).
Pig Iron do a nice selection of replacement heads.
