Flames of War! Listeners have been asking us to give our thoughts on this World War II miniatures combat game since episode 2 and we've finally done it.

Up first is an interview with Joe Krone of Battlefront miniatures. Joe gives us some insight into the company behind the game.

Later we dive in and look at what makes the game Flames of War tick in part one of our detailed review.

All that and our usual 'not too horrible' humor, with features such as:

- The Hollywood Minute
- Rapid Fire
- What's in the News
- Total Fan Girl
- & More

Hooray! I just finished listening to the last podcast (in short installments as recommended) and can't wait to hear the Flames of War review. Hopefully, I can withstand your jedi mind tricks and avoid another game purchase/marital crisis. But those tanks look so cool...maybe just a starter set...

P.S. - My D6G t-shirt is due to arrive via UPS today and will be worn proudly at NONCON this Saturday at the Green Dragon in Charleston, SC.

You are here on a matter of honor. I am here to see that you settle it honorably. There will be no back-stabbing, you will not throw your blades, nor will you use weapons other than those agreed. If quarter should be asked...

another great show, guys. Really liked the Flames of War focus as I've been thinking about trying it out for a while. Any recomendations for what one should pickup if they were thinking about a US force? Also really looking forward to the Firestorm Armada review as it just seems like Spartan have hit on something great with the game.

Seriously dudes, how good is Firestorm Armada? I'm getting the rulebook in a couple days, but I can't wait two weeks for a review.

Played some games of FSA last night and had a blast. If you really MUST get a sneak peak on what we think about it you can check out my initial thoughts on the book:

Ken from the score regularly comments and updates a thread on the D6G Facebook page.

Youc an check it out here: http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=60146958622&topic=7769

He usually lists all the songs referenced in each episode. If he hasn't yet, just put up a post.

Guys, I was really excited to hear a review of Flames of War, thanks for doing that! On the down side, that review was at times very difficult to follow. Usually the triumvirate works very smoothly when reviewing, but this one actually felt like there was a lot of talking over one another and a certain amount of "too many chefs".

Other than that, thanks. This year might be they year I pull the trigger and get into FOW.

Take care,

The Flames of War review was only part I of II? Now we are all left hanging! What if it has a huge plot shift or a suprise ending? There were so many interweaving points that I'm worried they won't get resolved! I think you guys were just selling out to make more money on the sequel, Flames of War II: Electric Boogaloo.

Damn, Spooky, you're on to us! We actually commissioned M. Night Shamalamadingdong to write that review, and you guys ain't seen NOTHIN' yet!

Firestorm: Armada=cool sandwich with an extra side of cool.

Unfortunately, we were all out of awesome sauce.

Hi guys, great episode, but wanted to rant a bit:

<rant>
In regards to Battlefront's takeover of Wargames Illustrated, they've totally ruined magazine. 6 months ago, it was my favorite wargames magazine, & now I'm just about ready to cancel my subscription.

I know many people might argue that it's now become a house magazine for FoW, since it has at least 1 FoW article every issue. But they paid their money for the magazine, & increased the page count enough that even if you ignore the FoW articles, there was still a net increase of pages. So, that part's fine with me.

One of the big things though is that they've changed it so each issue is "themed". This means most articles in an article are related to 1 specific topic. In the past they've had themes of WW2 North Africa, WW1, Southern Campaign in the Revolutionary War, etc.

Previously, WI ran a wide variety of articles, & of course you wouldn't be interested in all of them. But because of the different wars, periods, aspects of the articles, there was a good chance you'd find most of them of interest. But now, if you don't happen to be interested in the month's theme, you're stuck with a large portion of the magazine being of little interest.

& to make things worse, it seems that in addition to the themed articles, each issue has an article having to do with the prior month's theme. So, in this month's Revolutionary War issue, there's also a WW1 article that was the theme last month. So that compounds the problem even more. & this month's RevWar issue is the worst so far. If you take out the themed articles, & the WW1 article that was last month's theme, there are only 3 articles covering 2 subjects left. Not a great value for $8.

Also, another big problem is the content of the articles. Previously, almost every article would have some sort of either generic scenario included in it, or a scenario for a specific set of rules. Both styles were good because the former would allow you to use whatever rules you wanted, & the latter would introduce you to new rules systems.

But now, while there still articles with generic & specific rules scenarios in them, 1/3 of the articles have no scenarios at all. Or really even discuss how the subject relates to wargaming (e.g. how do you translate the subject to the tabletop). So, they're just military history articles with no direct wargaming application. While the articles may be interesting, they certainly don't follow the magazine's tag line of "the world's premiere tabletop wargaming magazine".

Obviously, I'm very upset about this change, & probably have put too much time & effort into analyzing my concerns, but did want to give the other, non-company propaganda view on the matter too.
</rant>

Thanks for listening

Well, Nils, I'm not familiar with WI myself, and although Raef did pick up this month's issue, he doesn't often hop on here to look at what ya'll are talking about. But I'd have to say that it sounds like you've got some realistic and understandable complaints there. Have you written to the magazine, or Battlefront? It would seem to me that you wouldn't be the only person having these concerns after such a sweeping change to the nature of the magazine, and maybe if enough people react unfavorably they'll get the hint and switch some things back.

Or not. You know. Who knows. half the company is former GW, so you never can tell how they're going to react.

But if it was my favorite magazine, I'd give it a shot anyway.

Good luck!

Thanks Craig, Yes, I've already written to WI after the 1st few issues. Some of the things I've complained at that time about have been fixed (so I didn't include them above). & they said they were going to reassess their themed issues this month. So my rant above was basically a rough draft for the email I'll be sending them soon.

Hi guys. I'm glad you focused on FoW, and I enjoyed the interview.

I've been "catching up" on episodes in between releases, so I've been listening to many of your reviews lately. I have to agree with Nathonicus that the FoW review was not up to your normal high quality. There seemed to be confusion on rules and how things work and lots of corrections and "I'm not sure" comments. Again, I typically really enjoy and look forward to your reviews, so no hate intended.

I'm looking forward to the next episode, and I wish you all a fantastic holiday.

I'm a bit behind, but what happened with the whole 'chapter marks in the MP3 stream' thing?

It looks like it should be possible, and I don't think you'll need to do a separate stream... The 'chapter marks' are part of the ID3 tags and I think the expected standards=compliant behavior is to ignore unsupported tags.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

Sadly it's not quite that simple.

However we have added time offsets to the show notes in recent episodes to help folks fast forward to a specific section.

I consider it a failing of the iPod itself rather than the programming; their stupid touch sensitive wheel was a bad idea that continues to proliferate despite its lack of utility. Many a time I've nudge the back button and have had to spend five minutes rapidly spining the non-wheel to get back to where I was. Oh sure, back in the old days we had to hit the fast foward button on the cassete tape and podcasts were recorded on 8-track and we liked it that way...but I digress.

In the mean time, the anticipation for Hollywood's contest winner is killing me.
