Fellow Dakka-ites.
I'm in New York for two days on business, never been before and have no idea what to do with myself on Thursday between getting up time and 1620 when I need to be back at JFK to fly back to London.
Soooo, I could wander around the big apple aimlessly like a tourist OR I could play some games.
Anyone know of a decent FLGS in the city where I could find a pick up game of WFB (or 40K but I suck) and an army to borrow? I'm staying at the Sheraton Manhattan at Times Square, so somewhere relatively near by that I can get to on the Metro or whatever would be ace.
The right suggestion wins a beer on me, or whatever it is you yanks drink...
Fitz.

The GW Store on 8th st. near Broadway (Greenwich Village) is a fun place to hang out. I stop in whenever I come down from the countryside to visit my dad. Theres usually some pick up games going. There's probably an army there you can use. Talk to Ian. He's a good guy.

Oh man, if you were around a bit after 4:30pm, you could've probably hung out for gaming with the Warmongers on 33rd street at the Compleat Strategist. Great store worth visiting. But asides from there and the aforementioned GW store in the village (a bit further away from you), there aren't too many other Manhattan options.
Not too much gaming going on mid day outside of the GW store either, though given that schools are still in session, it's not going to be full of the typical youngsters. Barring that, you could hit up some of the more famous NYC food establishments. If you can make it out there, Grimaldi's pizza in Brooklyn is worth the trip.

The Strategist is on 33rd and 5th ave (on 33rd street itself, about 5 doors east of 5th). It's a 15 minute walk from your hotel and across the street from the Empire State Building so you'll get some tourism in.
They have some OOP GW stuff (or did when I was there this summer) and tons of other older games.

I visited the Strategist! What an ace shop, shame I couldn't get a game in. However I did purchase a "compleat strategist" branded GF9 Arc of Visibility template as a souvenir.
Cheers for the tips fellas.

That immediate area looks a bit dodgy, but the shop is indeed fun. Hope you enjoyed your free day in NYC.

Not nearly as dodgy as some of the bits I went through in my walk down Broadway! Walked from 51st to 3rd Street and back, a really nice day out.

Can't really comment as they were in dollars, and I do pounds. Didn't notice any "SALE" tags around though.

From my experience, they tend to hover around MSRP. I don't recall ever getting anything on sale there in the past, but they sort of make up for it by simply having so much stuff.

The Strategist is not the place to go for bargain hunting, it's where you go to find dusty shelves with stuff you never knew existed.
